Seeing as there has been a mild edit war going on over this passage, mostly between unregistered users, I have isolated and flagged it. It appears that the user(s) adding it is located in New York, and may be a primary source. Unless another source can be provided - one that documents the popularity of the jackets as a significant cultural phenomenon - or some other argument can be made for the importance of this information, then it should be removed permanently.
