I'm John Snow, and I know nothing about medleys, but I do know the difference between effective and incomprehensible prose. Someone clearer than my predecessors about sport than I, and clearer about logic than that/those editor(s), should review the sources, and rewrite with jargon-independent language that accurately reflects the rules and clarifies whether the teams separate "heats" failed collectively or merely coincidentally.
