Lyric Confusion

Deltabeignet deleted the Lyric Confusion section. I reposted it because it is necassary. Ever since its release in 1977, the song's lyrics have been disputed. Go to several internet lyric websites, or Buffett websites at that, and campare the lyrics. There will clearly be several sources that say "wastin'" and others that say "wasted". I have re-deleted this section. English-language song lyric websites are notoriously inaccurate in general. "Wasted away" is not idiomatic English (other than as past tense/past participle of "to waste away" [to nothing, etc.]), including where 'wasted' means 'extremely drunk', the meaning of 'wasted' that I believe the original author and restorer of the 'Lyric Confusion' section (and some lyrics websites) may have in mind. On the other hand, "to waste away" (e.g. "waste away to nothing") is a widely-used English expression that makes full sense within the lyrics as a whole. (Query also whether 'wasted' meaning 'extremely drunk' was common slang usage when "Margaritaville" was written.) Rfontana (talk) 12:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

This does not answer the dispute about whether he is saying "wastin' away" or "wasted away". Song lyric websites excluded, it is still notable as many of Buffett's merchandise includes both "wastin'" or "wasted". Please read the comments and the article itself before deleting. Thank you. Copyvio?

I think it's okay. They're only snippets and there is little chance of a copyvio. Thousands of places on the Internet contain all the lyrics for hundreds of thousands songs without any kind of prosecution. Since we're only including portions—and giving Buffett credit—there shouldn't be any problem. The song has a lot more lyrics that we don't include. — Frecklefoot | Talk 19:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

"Thousands of places on the Internet" are not Wikipedia. The amount of song that is not included here is not all that much--just two out of the three verses. Since the chorus repeats (though not exactly), close to half the song (maybe more) appears on this site. Either one verse or the chorus (not both, and not the variations in the chorus) should be included. Better yet, delete all the lyrics and include a link to a site that has explicitly been licensed by Buffett or ABC Records to publish the lyrics. 165.247.1.93 00:07, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't think Buffett or ABC Records care about song lyrics being reprinted in Wikipedia. They're not trade secrets. If anything, they'd be glad for the publicity.66.68.80.64 (talk) 03:44, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

This song was written about a drink in Austin, Texas, and the first huge surge of tourist who descended on Key West almost two decades ago. What can I say? People ask if I ever get tired of playing it. The answer is no. It has paid the rent for a long time and seems to put a few minutes of joy into this troubled world when sung by fans at a show. Steve Goodman

It's my understanding that Steve Goodman wrote "Margueritaville." If so, it clearly should be noted here. I have done a bit of searching but can't find specific Copyright attribution - just a whole lot of presumption that Buffet wrote it. MongoPawn (talk) 21:23, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Elvis as original intended person to record the song

The article, and the source for that section of the article, states that the song was supposed to be recorded by Elvis Presley but Elvis died so Jimmy recorded it instead. The song was released in February 1977 and Elvis died in August 1977, six months after the song came out. It can't be possible that Jimmy ended up recording the song himself because of Elvis' death. Elvis was very much alive and still performing when Jimmy recorded Margaritaville. User:Stardog01 (talk) 19:21, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Where was the song "Margaritaville" written? The Margaritaville page says "this song was written about a drink Buffett discovered at Lung's Cocina del Sur restaurant on Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas, and the first huge surge of tourists who descended on Key West, Florida around that time; he wrote most of the song that night in Austin and finished it while spending time in Key West" while the Key West, Florida page says "the song most associated with Key West is Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett however the song Margaritaville was written in Fort Myers, Florida, but came to be synonymous with Key West due to the ties that Jimmy Buffett had to the city." — Mmathu (talk) 22:31, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Ambiguous Writing
