Malcolm Smith is not only well known within the sport of rock climbing, his achievements have been key to the development of the new, very extreme style of traditional rock climbing emerging now. His development of structured training regimes in place of the "climb for fun" mentality which had previously prevailed not only enabled his own best climbs such as Hubble, it was an essential part of the UK-wide development of hard bouldering and trad climbing.
