Safety details and Injury statistics? edit

So what are the safety aspects of this? Do people wear helmets, etc? Seems like if you slip and fall off there a good chance you slip off sideways, with your head potentially whacking straight onto the log.

How many injuries have occurred with this sport from head trauma, and how many deaths have occurred from drowning and/or getting knocked unconscious when falling off?
