Why is it likely?

“.. the exact words in all probability being the ones that Smyth was relaying....”

How would you know this?

Less sanitized version here.....

http://www.policehistory.utvinternet.com/listowel.html

To call this article a "sanitized version" is completely unfair and, I think, reflects the anonymous commentator's own POV.

There are two different versions of what was said at Listowel that day: Mee's, and Smyth's. The article's author seems to consider Smyth's version more reliable, and is not alone in this judgment: IIRC, Charles Townshend also came down on the side of Smyth in one of the standard workd on the War of Independence, The British Campaign in Ireland.

Nonetheless, other historians have concluded that Mee was the more reliable witness. The article should be revised to reflect the fact that there is disagreement over whose version of events was authoritative. Moreover, it should be stressed that, regardless of what actually happened, many people at the time believed Mee's account.

Historical judgments hardly count as "sanitization," except in the minds of the ideologically committed.--Cliodule (talk) 04:09, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality disputed? edit

Is the neutrality of this article still disputed? Not possible to tell from unsigned comments above if resolution was reached. RashersTierney (talk) 14:24, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
