Should the Teritorial Authority area actually link to the TLA?

Currently the Auckland entries link to the Community council i.e. Albert-Eden - rather than Auckland Council

what constitutes a mall?

In particular I'm looking at Dunedin and Timaru...some of these things are a Pak N Save with a pharmacy, medical centre and a few other shops attached...is this still a mall? If they're officially called a mall, I think they're fair game for this list - similarly if they're a single building deliberately designed to house a number of shops. The Dunedin one's for instance - I presume you're referring to South City Mall (so named) - which is a Pak N Save, a pharmacy, a medical centre (and currently quite a few offices). It is designated a mall (it's in its name), and several of the upstairs premises are currently offices but were designed as shops, were shops, and will probably be shops again (its not so long since there was a hairdressers, a maincurists and a florists upstairs, for instance). largest in hemisphere

From what I can tell, Knox city isn't the largest mall in the Southern hemisphere-- the information listed on the entry for the Gateway theatre of shopping in Durban, South Africa beats the floorspace at Knox by almost 40,000 m². —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.97.213.250 (talk) 03:44, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

List dispute

This list is filled with run of the mill shopping centres with very few tenants and questionable notability. If there are no objections my suggestion is to retrench the list by removing all entries without an article. The one exception is Northlands Mall which hasn't been created yet. Removing all entries that have no article is a drastic step that I don't support. It would mean the removal of the following Auckland entries which are notable malls with food courts: Atrium on Elliott (3 or 4 levels, Warehouse anchor), Highbury Shopping Centre (Countdown and Warehouse anchors), Milford Shopping Centre (Countdown and Warehouse anchors), Shore City - Takapuna (2 levels, Farmers anchor). That's just Auckland. It looks like many other cities probably have notable malls and shopping centres that don't have articles yet. Akld guy (talk) 19:18, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

We should then establish a criteria for inclusion/exclusion. I probably agree with you on a couple of those Auckland shopping centres mentioned. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Christchurch but a lot of them aren't worthy of inclusion.Ajf773 (talk) 17:58, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

I forgot about this discussion. I've been trying to clean up some of the other global shopping centre/shopping mall articles and came back to this article. Regarding Christchurch I believe only the blue linked entries should stay, as well as six others (Northlands, Hornby Hub, South City, Merivale, Bush Inn and Eastgate). Criteria for inclusion

Here are some suggestions for criteria for inclusion, in no particular order of priority:

• 1. has "mall" or "shopping centre" in its name
• 2. has a significant number of shops under one roof, or more than one roof (eg. Botany Town Centre)
• 3. has a food court
• 4. has at least one anchor tenant such as Farmers, Countdown, The Warehouse, a cinema centre
• 5. has on-site parking, either flat ground or a parking building

If a proposed entry has all of the above, it certainly qualifies. If three or four of the criteria are met, the entry probably still qualifies. If two are met, it's doubtful, but may still qualify. If only one is met, the entry doesn't qualify.

Many of the existing Auckland entries meet all the criteria and do qualify. Queen's Arcade (off Queen Street in the CBD) meets only item 2 and I propose to delete it if there are no objections within a reasonable time. Akld guy (talk) 12:49, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

• One of the criteria applied to AfD discussions is if the mall is of a certain size (ie > 50,000 m3 or 100 shops) that is usually notable. And at least comes with plenty of independent secondary sources. Any entry that would be worthy of a Wikipedia article, in that sense. I would also be wary of list entries that contain "shopping centre" in the title whereas they exists as only a few shops with a little bit of off-street parking. eg. I would not class the Kelston Shopping Centre as notable (even if it has a Countdown). Ajf773 (talk) 05:47, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for replying! It's a few years since I've been to Kelston, but based on what I remember, it doesn't qualify. I would also like to remove DFS Galleria Customhouse. It's a 4-level complex with up-down escalators to each floor. The shops inside sell jewellery, watches, handbags, purses, travel bags, cosmetics, shoes, and some specialty clothing and herbal remedies. Totally aimed at women, and very upmarket (Gucci, Versace, etc). Has no food outlet, no anchor tenant, no parking. Meets only criterion 2 and probably has no more than 50 shops. Its "Duty-Free Store" status means it's of limited interest to New Zealanders. Akld guy (talk) 07:18, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Tauranga and Rotorua

As a result of a week spent on holiday in the Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, and Tauranga area, and a one-day visit to Rotorua, I am personally satisfied that the Bayfair Shopping Centre and Papamoa Plaza malls should be in the list, and created the Tauranga Crossing article on my return after visiting all three. I'm also satisfied that Rotorua Central mall belongs in the list, having eaten lunch in the food court there. I have doubts about many of the other Tauranga entries. Perhaps someone familiar with Tauranga would like to remove entries that don't belong. What, for example, is Westfield Mall, and is Tauranga city Centre simply the general CBD area? • I'm not familiar with any of the Tauranga entries other than the three you mentioned. If there is no evidence of notability we should remove them. I have my doubts about Rotorua Central as well, although it has been some time since I was last there. Ajf773 (talk) 09:53, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

List dispute

This has been discussed several times before, as per earlier talk sections. If we are to include notable shopping centres only, then we should exclude all listing that don't have their own article, or otherwise redirect to another article ... unless there is a substantially good reason why a shopping centre should be mentioned (and an article is yet to be created). Some of these are just small shopping strips with a few stores and maybe a supermarket attched, and certainly aren't notable. There is even a suggestion of inclusion criteria mentioned.
