Harringay (yes, that's Harringay in Haringey, welcome to English spelling)

why was this needed? there's no sign here that it has caused any confusion is there? Or have I missed the point? Nevilley

yes thanks I know, I live there, but I was just asking why we need the warning when there is no evidence that it has casued trouble on here? Is it just as a precuationary measure IN CASE there is confusion - erm a sort of prophylactic?? Anyway, blimey, it's not that confusing, the h2g2 article exaggerates it a bit - there are 2 diff things with 2 diff spellings, one is older than the other. The speculation about "gay" I just don't believe at all. The word has been spelt many ways. "Hornsey" is thought to be the same place name in yet another version.

Sorry. I didn't put that comment in the article and I think it was inappropriate. I was only pointing an explanation of the spelling differences in case you weren't aware of it. Mintguy

I'm very worried about The Anome, that's the 433rd change he/she's made to the Harringay line - it's starting to look obsessive - can I send you some money for chocolate or something, get you to take a break?? :)

Whitehall

Also, I'm moving Whitehall to world famous sites. My reason: I think the intention of the "divisions" bit was to point out contrasts - this is how it started, with West vs East ends etc. And as such I think it's quite a reasonable idea. But if that's right, it doesn't make sense to just drop any one area in there. You could do that with anywhere - Hampstead is a contrast with the rest, so is Finsbury Park, etc. If it's meant to work as I suspect then that bit needs meaningful pairs of places to work well. In fact I wonder if the wording of the header has caused confusion - maybe I will have a go at that? Ah well ... off we go again ... Nevilley 21:45 Jan 18, 2003 (UTC)

Tunnels

I've just moved the Greenwich Foot and Blackwall Tunnels into the order suggested by my map. One other thing occurs to me about the list of river crossings - if the ELL (Thames Tunnel) is in there, shouldn't the other Underground lines be included? --rbrwr

Yes, they should. I'll add the ones that are on my map, but I don't have the complete picture. -- Heron

Greater London boundary

Ummm ... I wonder what (if any) criteria we are applying for "villages that make up greater London" or whatever it's called? The reason I ask is that some of the places in the list really do seem to be quite a long way from Charing Cross! :) I am not saying this is wrong, I'm just wondering if anyone was working to some kind of border and if so where it is. It certainly isn't the North/South Circulars - is it maybe the M25? Some local authority boundaries? Or what?? Having typed all that I find I am not really really sure if it actually matters, in the cosmic scale of things. I'm just vaguely interested to see if Brighton or Luton will eventually turn up ... Greater London is a metropolitan area (I think that's the official term) that has a well-defined border. It's the bit inside the ring formed by the Home Counties. It is made up of all the places that begin "London Borough of ..." and all the villages etc. that they contain. You are right to say that the M25 and other roads have nothing to do with the boundary. -- Heron

Downing street

Would Downing Street be better placed under "individual locations" than "tourist sites"? Certainly it's a tourist destination, but it's also known generally as the seat of power, and would seem to be more appropriate in that sense. Shimgray 20:22, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

List of places in London#Districts

I'm keen to turn this section into a gazetteer style table with grid refs, boroughs, maybe postal districts etc. This will be a huge task. Does anyone have any interest in this? or views on what should be included? MRSC • Talk 10:44, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

I think there may be a lot missing - I've added a fair few just from the London boroughs I know. Not all of these are equally notable, of course, but I have taken the simple criterion for inclusion as being those places with an existing WP article - no redlinks involved. I think this is a useful exercise, by the way, quite apart from your gazetteer table - I am currently looking out for districts lacking pics, so this is a handy list to check through. Well, checking for essentials, I've just gone through the list of current boroughs checking that their core districts - where these have separate district listings - are all there, so have added a few. I suppose, for completeness, the old Metropolitan/Municipal/County Boroughs should be checked too - most of their names do live on. Tarquin Binary 17:28, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Only London?

Shouldn't this really be called List of places in Greater London? This is an encyclopedia, afterall. Jhamez84 02:15, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Why not call it "in the South East": the Isle of Grain - not an island anyway - is in Kent (or actually in Medway to be absolutely correct!!!) Peter Shearan 19:13, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
