Separate sections
editThe Clinton page has a section for commutions and pardons seperately. Should this be done here? ⇒ SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 04:00, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Missing pardonees
editHelp tracking down the missing pardonees would be greatly appreciated. Ohwilleke 23:43, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Organization
editI came over here to learn about the people pardoned yesterday, but your list is alphabetical. Paul, in Saudi (talk) 11:32, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Revocation
editToussie is listed but whether he was pardoned or not depends on one's definition of pardon since it was later revoked. I don't understand it myself since US pardon power is absolute so how it can be revoked suggests that the pardon was not in fact real despite the pardon being officially announced by the DoJ. The reference given for the pardon is correct but there is no reference given for the revocation - at the very least the revocation needs a citation. (It's been reported in various newspapers but the reporting is so bad (reporters clearly don't understand what they're reporting on) that a better reference is needed.
Until these questions are answered, I recommend a separate section be created for people who it is not clear whether they were actually pardoned or not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Donlibes (talk • contribs) 20:17, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
If Bush pardons himself, but not by name
editDespite prior statements by Bush, it's likely that he'll pardon "all U.S. persons for crimes related to [specific legislation concerning torture]". Since this includes him as evidenced by his admission to ordering the military to waterboard, should we mention him separately of everybody else, or should we say that he pardoned "all U.S. persons for crimes related to [specific legislation concerning torture], including himself"? 64.81.59.139 (talk) 05:38, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
You're worried about a possible edit you'll have to make based on speculation of something President Bush might say... why don't you worry about it, if and when it happens? 138.89.248.36 (talk) 10:01, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Was Libby pardoned?
editI can't find a reference to an actual pardon; only to the commutation of his sentence.
Perhaps reorganizing this into a table (name, action [pardon, comm, both], date, descr) would make it more useful.
Bjmckenz (talk) 23:01, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Libby's sentence was commuted, which is short of receiving a full pardon. SteveSims (talk) 05:43, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
This page is a mess
editThe list of pardons is supposed to be alphabetical, the one of commutations sorted by date? Where is Libby? The referenced CNN article "Bush pardons do not include Scooter Libby" is dead (but still in Google cache), and all pardons listed were put in the commutations list. The c list doesn't include any from the official COMMUTATIONS GRANTED BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH list. Lars T. (talk) 07:25, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, it is a mess. I just cleaned it up by (1) removing more than a dozen "commuted" that were already listed as pardoned; (2) moving 1 commuted to pardoned; (3) inserting the 8 missing commuted; (4) correcting the total count of pardoned and commuted in the lede; (5) moving 18 supposedly commuted into a new heading of Probably pardoned. These 18 are listed with two different expired references, so corrected references need to be found and then they should be moved into pardoned. I recommend that both lists be organized by date rather than alphabetically, and the information should probably be displayed in a table, with columns for name, date of pardon, year of crime, description of crime. I also recommend that the pardoned list be completed.Anomalocaris (talk) 10:12, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Chico Aguilar Solis was sentenced in 2007 and pardoned in 2004 (How would this be possible?) - would please someone verify and correct this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:A61:598:7301:8959:C160:1323:FAD1 (talk) 12:35, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
Chico Aguilar Solis is not mentioned on the official document linked to the entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:A61:598:7301:8959:C160:1323:FAD1 (talk) 12:38, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
Commutations announced January 19 2009
editWhat about the border guard that was sentenced for shooting an illegal drug smuggler; where is his name??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.102.143.251 (talk) 18:30, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- Ignacio Ramos & Jose Compean, listed under Commutations. TJRC (talk) 19:29, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Sources
editHere are two sources for this subject:
- http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/bush-comm.htm Commutations Granted by President Bush (2001-Present) (through May 24, 2008
- http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/bushpardon-grants.htm Pardons Granted by President Bush (2001-Present) (though May 20, 2004)
Improvements
editSo the above given sources, http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/bush-comm.htm Commutations Granted by President Bush (2001-Present) and http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/bushpardon-grants.htm Pardons Granted by President Bush (2001-Present) , both actually current through March 24, 2008, seem like the best place to begin fixing the list of pardons. I suggest listing the pardons by date pardoned, with those individuals pardoned on the same date listed alphabetically, following the same format used in for the commutations in this article: Name, date pardoned, (description of crime). Any objections? ClovisPt (talk) 18:05, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Cautious
editCautious. This term is unkind. All the pardons were based on the recommendation of Justice. The Four Deuces (talk) 08:31, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
