Avon

I have come accross an excellent resource for hillfort listings at English Heritage's Pastscape web resource [1], unfortunately it still lists Avon as a county. For the moment I have added these into Somerset, but it would not surprise me if some should be in Gloucestershire or Bristol. I will try and check these in more detail as and when I am able, in the meantime I apologize for any incorrectly located hillforts! Pahazzard (talk) 18:15, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Pastscape is a valuable resource. I'm surprised they use Avon as a county, but I suppose it must be a pain to reorganise collections due to boundary changes. Aside from that, it's pretty handy and a good place for find information on further reading. The search function can be a bit hit-and-miss and hillforts aren't always given the title "xyz hillfort" and are sometimes called "monument 12345" instead, so that's something to look out for. Yes I have seen list of hill forts and ancient settlements in Somerset, there is a lot of good work gone into that, a great exemplar for other counties. The Pastscape site is very useful, and yes I had spotted the issues of their indexing and search systems, it might take a while to cross check nothing gets missed, other than that I am uncertain over some of their descriptions, such as "may have been the site of an ironage hillfort". I have assumed for the moment that article listings should be added for such sites, on the basis that they can be removed, or reattributed to elsewhere, once exact confirmation and consensus has been reached. Several QUANGOs still use pre 1994 counties eg Site of Scientific Interest are still listed under Avon. On a quick look at the Somerset section of the list:

• Clifton Down Promontory Fort is Bristol - opposite side of the Avon Gorge to Stokeleigh Camp (which I think is the same as Stokesleigh Camp)
• Assuming Blaise Castle Hillfort is the same site as Blaise Castle then it is Bristol
• Bury Hill, Winterbourne would be Glos assuming Winterbourne, Gloucestershire
• Dyrham Camp would be S Glos if at Dyrham
• Duncorn Hill,_Dunkerton already has an article at Duncorn Hill (but no evidence of Iron Age etc in 1966 survey)
• Tog Hill, Cold Ashton would be South Gloucestershire see Cold Ashton

• Abbey Camp is Alveston S. Glos
• Aldebury is Bristol
• Bloody Acre is Cromhall S. Glos
• Camp is Aust S. Glos
• Horton Camp is Horton, Gloucestershire S. Glos
• Knole Park Camp is Almondsbury S. Glos
• Sodbury Camp is Little Sodbury S. Glos
• The Castle, Tytherington is Tytherington, Gloucestershire S. Glos

I think the others you have added rightly belong in Somerset & if not already included should be added to list of hill forts and ancient settlements in Somerset & will then get an article added when I have some time.— Rod ^talk 21:28, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Un-named Hillforts

Ok, so I'm making a big push to get through hundreds of hillforts listings on Pastscape and adding any missing ones onto this article. The trouble is not all of them have names - some are just monument numbers. No names on maps either! I am effectively giving them names when I add them to the list here, either from geographic location, i.e. the name of the hill they are on, or the nearest town/village. However, this could still be confusing to whoever wants to research and create a new article, and refer back to Pastscape. To try and avoid confusion or mis-direction I am now going to add the monument number against such hillforts on the list in hidden text, such as: Highbury Hill,_Clutton I hope that this makes sense. Atlas of Hillforts

The Atlas of Hillforts is a new, publicly accessible site created to map and describe all hillforts in the British Isles. As well as creating its own site, the Atlas has shared some data about each site with Wikidata. On the project page we are listing tasks related to the data import, where help is welcomed. One possibility is of overhauling list-of-hillforts articles by adapting drafts created by ListeriaBot. See the prototype being worked on at User:MartinPoulter/Hillforts. 1124?

This figure for the total number of hillforts, taken from the Guardian article of 2016 , is a very exact number when both the article and the website make it clear that many of those in the list are only possible/probable rather than scheduled ancient monuments counted by English heritage.--FDent (talk) 18:56, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

The article says that [the hillfort atlas authors] decided that 4,147 sites warranted the term hill fort (going on to break that down by country, which is where the 1,124 in England figure comes from). Although there might well be doubt about some of them, if experts think that there's probably that many, that should be good enough for us. Not all archaeological sites in England are scheduled monuments; not by a long shot. – Joe (talk) 18:35, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
