Synagogues with articles

edit

This articles currently list approximately three dozen synagogues, although there have, over the years, been over 1,200 different synagogues in the United Kingdom (according to this site). In the 3 1/2 years since this article was created, no attempt has been made in this article to provide a comprehensive list, nor would one appear to be necessary or useful, as one of the external links already includes a near complete list of all synagogues, past and present, in the British Isles. Accordingly,I have deleted from the list those few synagogues that had been listed but for which there are no Wikipedia articles, in order that the list can reflect only those synagogues for which Wikipedia articles exist. Perhaps we might usefully split the list into two categories – active synagogues and former synagogues? Headhitter (talk) 11:52, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've now identified the former synagogues under a separate heading within each geographical list. Headhitter (talk) 08:56, 22 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Buildings or synagogues?

edit

I added a synagogue to this list of synagogues. The addition was a synagogue. That list includes buildings -- but is not limited to buildings. An editor deleted it because it was not a building. I don't think that is correct -- it is not a "list of synagogue buildings", either by its title or lead-in para.--Epeefleche (talk) 17:05, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps then, we should amend the title or lead para to include the word "building". If we included all synagogues, then the list would simply duplicate the existing List of Jewish communities in the United Kingdom. I have now added to that list the synagogue that User:Epeefleche refers to. Headhitter (talk) 18:08, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
This all seems murky and confusing to me, rife with inconsistencies and loose descriptive language, having taken a glance at List of Jewish communities by country. Naturally, ITRW, I would think that the phrase "synagogue" refers to ... a synagogue (not a synagogue building). And that "community" refers to a community -- such as Kaifeng Jews == not a synagogue. But glancing on what has developed across the Project, it appears that whatever one's reading of those terms, we are anything but consistent.
On a separate topic -- the images here should be moved around to try to avoid sandwiching, per our MOS, and put in the sections of the articles they relate to if possible (again per MOS). Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 18:16, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. The images are casually placed in a column which is already too long for the article, making it hard to add any more. One solution is to add a gallery to each section and use only the most notable images in relevant prominent positions. Alternatively, the number of pictures could be reduced, per the MoS rule against treating an article as a repository. We should also make an effort to add suitable encyclopaedic content for retained images. Bjenks (talk) 04:15, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ealing Synagogue

edit

I have added Ealing Synagogue (http://www.ealingsynagogue.org.uk/), which is separate from the Ealing Liberal Synagogue. If this is in some way incorrect I hope someone will change it. Ondewelle (talk) 20:27, 11 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
