Greetings. I'm not sure how to go about changing this but when I ran a search in Wiki for "Retired NHL numbers" this page did not come up. When I searched the same string in google I did find this page. Maybe someone who knows more about wiki linking could make the adjustment to include this page for those search terms. "Only four players have had their numbers retired by two franchises"

What about Gordie Howe, #9 for the Red Wings and Whalers? As the article notes, the Hurricanes revoked the retirement, but his #9 was retired by two NHL franchises. Bradd 07:36, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

list of teams by number of retired jerseys

I think the list of teams by number of retired jersey numbers should include the teams with 0 retirements. I know the Sharks haven't retired any numbers, but don't feel like digging through the list to find any others (Ducks come to mind). Gentgeen 20:57, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

St. Louis Blues out of order

When sorting on the franchise column, the St. Louis Blues are at the end of the list, rather than where they should be. Does anyone understand the sortname well enough to fix it? I'll try experiementing if no one has fixed it in a week or so.Naraht (talk) 15:27, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Unofficially retired numbers

I would note for consideration that while the Carolina Hurricanes do not have Howe's 9 hanging in the RBC Center, they do not issue the number. The same is true for the 3 of Steve Chiasson. Also Wayne Maki of the Vancouver Canucks, with #11. It was the source of quite a bit of controversy when Mark Messier wore it, because the team basically invoked the "Well, it's not really retired..." explanation to the outrage of Maki's family. 192.197.178.2 (talk) 19:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

For the Detroit Red Wings, #6 (Larry Aurie) is actually considered an "unofficial" retired number. The Red Wings consider it "out of circulation," despite petitions by Aurie's family over the years. #16 is also out of circulation with the Red Wings in honor of permanently disabled defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov. This following sentence should be considered to deletion or alteration: "In addition, the number 66 used by Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins has not been worn by any player in the league since his retirement and is generally considered to be 'unofficially retired'." Andy Rogers of the Toronto Maple Leafs is now wearing 66 on his jersey. Granted this is only pre-season, so I don't know if that number will stay. However, it's something you might want to keep an eye on.

There should be another section for "other numbers" or some such thing to cover things like Larry Aurie's #6 in Detroit and similar situations. Rejectwater (talk) 01:17, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

On 66 - T. J. Brodie wore 66 last year, so I agree that the statement on Lemieux should be removed. Theo Fleury's 14 in Calgary would also be an unofficially retired number, but I have two issues with this proposed addition: first, scope creep. I think there is value in making a paragraph in the prose noting that some numbers have been unofficially retired with notable examples, however. The other concern is citeability. There are only a few cases where a team has come out and said a number is not retired but also not in circulation. It would be very hard to reference many examples. Peter Stastny & the Quebec Nordiques

How could Stastny's #26 be retired on February 26, 1996 when the team officially moved to Denver as of May 25, 1995? Stastny retired AFTER the team was sold and the move announced. So how could his number be retired? MrNWA4Life 01;47 10 October 2009 (UTC)

That is odd. The Colorado Avalanche 2014–15 media guide has a page (190) for the numbers retired by the team when they were in Quebec and sure enough Stastny is listed there. "Stastny's #26 was retired by the Quebec Nordiques in February of 1996." --75.88.96.25 (talk) 03:01, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Colorado's media guide - offline and unable to verify what it says - would be mistaken. Statsny was still playing for St Louis in February 1996, and the date that people have added to the article is a date on which the Nordiques did not play, ergo they could not have retired that number that day. Further, he retired after the season ended, and then Quebec became Colorado. Echoedmyron (talk) 23:40, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

Dale Hawerchuk/Martin Erat

The Coyotes also have reissued Dale Hawerchuk's #10 to Martin Erat. I have not yet changed the article because I am unsure as to why they reissued it.

Would it make more sense to include a row in the table like this:

rather than having to mention multiple times throughout the article that this number, and only this number, was retired League-wide?
