Problem with User:SpacemanSpiff edit

Being one of the early Wikipedians (18th or so), I often find some people suddenly start being possessive about their edits and remove everything else added by others. This insane behavior is there from the beginning and it sucks often. There are other people who'd do "Google Test" and remove every "commonsense" on South Indian topic. Someone jumping in and acting like an expert or guard of good things are not new. But, it's insane that User:SpacemanSpiff is keep reverting my edit that has sane reason and labeling mine as vandalism. Long live Wikipedia. --Rrjanbiah (talk) 08:19, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

PROD edit

Start of copy from User talk:Sitush

there is a big tag stating that the article will be deleted what does it mean sitush?Mayan302 (talk) 14:07, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

There is a drive going on at the moment to "tag and assess" India-related articles - see this thread. AroundTheGlobe appears to have selected the "List of X caste" category as an area to concentrate upon while helping with the drive. I am unsure why they have nominated List of Nadars for deletion under the WP:PROD process when they have not done the same for similar lists that they have assessed today. Personally, I agree with their general sentiment that categories would suffice for all such lists but I know for a fact that when these issues have been raised previously at WP:AFD they have invariably not gained consensus.

You could always just remove the tag but AroundTheGlobe would probably then just nominate the list at AfD. I am going to copy your query and this response to Talk:List of Nadars and solicit a reply from that contributor. - Sitush (talk) 14:20, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

End of copy from User talk:Sitush Hmm...does dat mean wiki will also delete articles like list of Italian Americans.o is this rule just meant for India related articlesMayan302 (talk) 14:43, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • as Sityush mentioned, I was doing assessment of lists tagged WP India earlier today. A lot of the list I found to be unnecessary for various reasons and prodded them. You can have a look at the category [1] to see the others that have been tagged (unless they have been contested by tag removal). This list hardly has any prose, its mainly names, hence I tagged it as it would be better off as a category. I am unaware of past afds - maybe Sityush can throw light on those. Cheers, Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 14:45, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
There are loads of examples of them buried in the AfD archive morass. If you take this or any other that you have nominated to AfD on the grounds than a category will suffice then the nomination will definitely fail. I'll try to find you an example. - Sitush (talk) 14:48, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
The essay here demonstrates how messy it is to prove the point that only a category is required, but it does also give reasons why a list might be deleted if it corresponds to a category. As I said, I'll try to find some actual examples. - Sitush (talk) 14:52, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Here are a couple:
The second one is particularly useful in its summary, as it points out that a category cannot contain a redlink but a list can. - Sitush (talk) 14:56, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please also see the editing guideline Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates (WP:CLN, for short), especially the section entitled "Categories, lists and navigation templates are not duplicative" (WP:NOTDUP).--Arxiloxos (talk) 15:31, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the PROD, based on the info above. It is clearly not a proposal lacking in contentiousness. Feel free to nominate the article at WP:AFD. - Sitush (talk) 15:46, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Iv gone through the various links and Im still unconvinced. For it to qualify as a list there should be some sort of notability guideline for inclusion in the title (eg. List of Nadars who have represented India in sports). At the moment, theres not much prose, the names are stacked up without tables, which is akin to having all of them in a category. Im busy with the assessment drive at the moment, but yes I think I will be bringing this up in the future (not just this, but a broader discussion on people lists and minimum requirements). Cheers, Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 09:16, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
That is fine. However, PRODs are only for non-contentious deletions & therefore the tag had to go. - Sitush (talk) 11:12, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

As I said sitush.people rarely speak openly about their caste in tamil nadu.however if you can give me sometime(say two months) i can speak to the nadar leaders and ask them for the references you need from old newspapers.its quite time consuming and i also highly doubt if they can give me any refs of this type.or else i could meet the people on the list directly and ask them to identify their caste. But then again that's even more time consuming.you can go ahead and remove the list from wiki for the time being.i ll somehow get the refs and create this page again with the proper refs.Mayan302 (talk) 13:22, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Clean up edit

I have just been left this messageon my talk page. Please note that operating as a "team" might be constructed as meatpuppetry. As for my clean up, which I have just reinstated, please could you read User:Sitush/Common#Castelists before adding information to this article. That in turn refers to WP:V, WP:BLP and other policies, as well as to discussion concerning consensus regarding these lists. Please also note that the message on my talk page is incorrect in saying that I should do the research on the internet etc - the burden is on the person who adds the information. - Sitush (talk) 15:26, 9 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I appreciate your intention. But, I'm afraid that by looking for "reliable" sources, you may inturn cripple the article. For instance, it's a well known *fact* that Shiv Nadar, Haris Jayaraj, Vasanthkumar, etc belong to this list. --Rrjanbiah (talk) 14:50, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
If the article ends up "crippled" then that is how it is. We are not going to overturn consensus regarding policy etc here and we should not ignore it. There are literally thousands of things that I know to be true but which I cannot include in Wikipedia. Nothing to stop me publishing them somewhere else, of course. - Sitush (talk) 16:22, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
