Criteria for inclusion edit

Notability edit

Notability is a big issue in this article. Each entries can have a separate Wiki article. So editors have to take this in mind. They can better have a wiki account and make articles for the notable personalities and then add those names in this list making an internal link to main article. Mere addition of non-notable persons makes the standard of this list worse--Sureshmaran (talk) 00:32, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Refer Wikipedia:Notability (people) for adding personalities in the list articles. Discussions can be done on the talk page regarding removing or adding a personality in the article. Also editors can refer Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines and Wikipedia:No personal attacks--Sureshmaran (talk) 05:38, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Name edit

What justification is there for including people in this list if they do not have Madaliar as one of their names? I propose that all entries without this name should be removed, unless their entry can be listed as "X X Mudaliar" and that name is supported in a separate article about the person. - Fayenatic (talk) 11:29, 1 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is not necessary that the person's name is XXMudaliar. A person can be included in this list if he falls under any of these categories

  1. If a person's father is a Mudaliar
  2. Providing proper citation that the person is from Mudaliar family
  3. If the person belongs to a caste that is a part of Mudaliar community such as:
  1. Thondaimandala Saiva Velalar/Thondaimandala Mudaliar
  2. Sri Lankan Mudaliyars/Sri Lankan Vellalars
  3. Nanjil Mudali
  4. Kerala Muthali
  5. Thuluva Vellalar

Mudaliar article can be referred for the castes included in the Mudaliar community for adding personalities in this article--Sureshmaran (talk) 03:31, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the requirement is that a reliable source identifies the person as "Mudaliar". -- The Red Pen of Doom 03:43, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

yes ofcourse. Also Mudaliar is a caste title of the above mentioned castes and the persons of such castes is always referred as XYZMudaliar--Sureshmaran (talk) 03:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

A person can be added only he is a Mudaliar patrilineally as the caste system followed in India is inherited patrilineal--Sureshmaran (talk) 03:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually - a person can be added only if we have a reliable source that identifies them as "Mudaliar". Most of the current entries will need to be removed unless proper sourcing is brought forth.-- The Red Pen of Doom 12:17, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually most of the entries in this article belong to the caste which uses the title Mudaliar i.e. castes listed in Mudaliar article--Sureshmaran (talk) 07:36, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Without third party sourcing, they can all be challenged and removed. WP:OR. -- The Red Pen of Doom 12:18, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The article would need re-writing if it is to include anybody from the Mudaliar caste. It says it is about a surname. Therefore it should only include people who have this surname, or perhaps people whose father had this surname as well. One or the other would have to be clear from the name or verified from reliable sources. - Fayenatic (talk) 20:08, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

POV section titles edit

The term "freedomfighter" can only be used in very specific situations - and section titles are not one of them. Do not continue to use this term which is a violation of our policy to maintain a neutral point of view. -- The Red Pen of Doom 03:32, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

So what is this list? edit

From the lead, it would appear that this list should consist of people who have the title of Mudaliar - in which case, why are there so many people here whose names do not include it? If, on the other hand, it is intended to be a list of members of the three or so communities that use the title then we should heed this stuff and amend the lead section. In fact, we should probably delete the article because there is no way of verifying that the title is only used by the communities stated. - Sitush (talk) 18:47, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sitush, Actually in Tamil Nadu and some part of Kerala, the use of surname was abolished (almost) in the 1920s/30s. Infact, if you see the name of any person from Tamil Nadu or Kerala born after 1940s, they would not have surname (Instead, father's first name is used as initial). Does this answer your question? --Anbu121 (talk me) 18:55, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Not really, sorry. I think it implies that this list should be consist only of people who do have Mudaliar in their name, since there is no way that we can verify claims for those that do not. But I'm willing to bet that I have misunderstood. Whatever the case may be, we need to get some focus here - the scope at present is bizarre. - Sitush (talk) 19:08, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
The purpose of my reply was only to give an insight from history. I don't support retaining anything. I think, the first priority should be to clean up blp violations (living people without self-identification) --Anbu121 (talk me) 19:13, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yes, it needs cleaning up. But it will not be possible to do so until we figure out what the list is intended to represent. It seems to be representing several disparate things at present and that is clearly wrong. Should I add Robert the Bruce to it? The scope is pretty wide. <g> - Sitush (talk) 19:19, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

actor comedian N.Santhanam also belongs to Mudaliar Community...http://www.findbestbiography.com/santhanam ANNU MUDALIAR (talk) 16:03, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

This list is of people who bear the Mudaliar title and its variants, not people of the Mudaliar community (see umpteem past discussions above). In any event, the source you provide does not show Santhanam self-identifying as being a member of the community, for details regarding which please see User:Sitush/Common#Castelists. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 14:00, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Merger Proposal edit

There is an article List of Vellalars which is a super set of the existing article. Hence I propose to merge this with the other. please give your suggestions.Magentic Manifestations (talk) 09:19, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please see the section above. This article appears to be for people bearing the title of Mudaliar but maybe I am confused. - Sitush (talk) 13:51, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but the other article List of Vellalars, already includes notable people from Gounder, Mudaliar and Pillai, so do we need a standalone article for the same?Magentic Manifestations (talk) 13:03, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
We often seem to have people/places etc mentioned on several lists, sometimes with merit and sometimes not. I think that the easiest way to treat this one would be to turn it into a surname list, ie: something similar to Sharma. Anyone bearing the name and for whom we have an article gets a mention in the list. It becomes a sort of disambiguation page. - Sitush (talk) 02:42, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Clean up edit

The lead section of this article clearly says this page is to list the people with Mudaliar surname and not a list of people who belong to a caste having Mudaliar title. Hence this requires extensive clean up of persons who haven’t used Mudaliar surname (doesn’t matter if they belong to any caste that has mudaliar title). Some accounts keep on adding both non-notable and persons who haven’t used Mudaliyar surname --Srivatsarcot1 (talk) 16:59, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
