I suggest a change to how EPS players are being listed. In the example from the Western Force below, a player that joined the squad on an EPS contract, Francois van Wyk, is shown as going out. This just looks wrong:

Van Wyk gained an EPS contract when he did not have a full-time contract last year and yet he is shown as departing.

EPS players are signed and contracted for the season and are considered as part of the Super Rugby squad, as seen from the referenced source for the 2015 signings: "We’re very pleased to have Robbie and Ryan with us again, and to welcome Brad, Ross and Francois into our 35 man squad for 2015." – Michael Foley, Head Coach Western Force, October 2014.^{[rlist 1]}

It would make more sense to include the EPS players in the 2015 squad column, e.g.:

The number of EPS contracts is capped at 5 which brings the squad size for the Force in this case to 35. This total is still consistent with the squad sizes of other teams (such as from South Africa). -- Ham105 (talk) 09:24, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

The anomaly re Francois van Wyk is more due to 2014 than 2015. In 2014, he wasn't named in the full squad (or EPS), yet he made two appearances, so he's listed because he played for the side, rather than having had a contract. If he played during 2014, but not 2015, then he rightly is listed as "Out". If he does play during 2015, he'll be added into the 2015 squad. EPS players are not listed in the official squad in the official SANZAR media guides (see the 2014 edition for example). TheMightyPeanut (talk) 09:07, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, that's okay, I understand the method/system that's being used to list Francois van Wyk as going "Out". -- What I am suggesting is that this method/system should be modified. The reason is that it's misleading.

On the SANZAR media guides, EPS players are actually listed often enough. -- Take a look at page 97 of the example you provided which lists Alofa Alofa, Horwitz, Peterson, and Lucas; all EPS players; or in the 2013 edition on page 17 Mann-Rae, Van der Walt, R. Smith, Smiler, and Swanepoel were all EPS players, as were Ah Wong, Butler Davis Enever, and Seuteni on page 79 (that's 13 of them).

Some of the squads in these documents list only 28 or 29 players so they are not definitive lists of contracted players. They are merely guides for the media.

And the Francois van Wyk example is also not the only case – there are other similar previous instances (I won't list them here). The change I'm proposing is a small one -- i.e:

Your proposed method/system will fix the problem for Australian teams, but will retain it for others. What if a player plays one season for a N.Z. franchise, then drops to the WTG the following season? Should those players be added in? Similarly, in South Africa, players can play one season, then drop into the WTG – which usually consists of 50–60 players. The line has to be drawn somewhere. It would make no sense listing them all, therefore leaving you with the same problem, plus added inconsistencies between the countries. Your proposed method won't fix the problem, it will just move the goalposts. It won't make it simpler or improve reading the Out list clearer, there will still be anomalies which can cause the issue you described above.

This all basically boils down to the question of whether EPS players are part of the main squad or not. There is no real answer to this; as you indicated above, sometimes they're listed, sometimes they're not. Some teams list them separately, some don't.

Because Australian squads are smaller, EPS members are usually more likely to be used during the course of the season, so they will be included in the players list eventually anyway. For now, they are listed, so it's not as if there's vital squad information missing... TheMightyPeanut (talk) 01:58, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
