Awkward phrase

This sentence is awkward: "The city is attempting to buy out the aging strip malls and already destroyed Saddleback Plaza and build the new "Arbor at Lake Forest."

I changed the word "build" to "built" -- is that correct or should it be "to build"? Dcsutherland 17:56, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I have a problem with this opening section about "The Arbor." For one, while the history of El Toro (or Lake Forest now) as the epicenter of Saddleback Valley is absolutely appropriate, to define the town by this crappy strip mall is not. Sorry folks, it is what it is, and will be no better than the old Saddleback Plaza in fifteen years...it was a poorly designed project. And you say it was after "lots of planning?" Perhaps, but I'm a city planner, and to me that thing looks like the developer just got to do whatever maximized their profits. I'd be fired for proposing a piece of crap like that where I work. El Toro lost a chance to have a real downtown area that would have been unique in South County and make El Toro once again the center of the area. Sad. Anyway, this debate is subjective and not appropriate for the article body, but I bring it up to suggest that there are other points of view. Therefore when I have a chance I would like to make these changes and I think this section lacks a neutral POV as currently written.68.5.91.1 (talk) 07:28, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

El Toro redirect

I have an issue with "El Toro, California" redirecting to Lake Forest. It seems to me that this name should redirect to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, or have its own article. If someone can find a reliable source that identifies where the original town of El Toro was located in relation to present-day city boundaries and/or the base boundaries, I think we may be able to incorporate it into one of them. I live in Lake Forest. Before it was incorporated as Lake Forest, the whole area was called El Toro, and that was my mailing address. The name still applies to various things, for example, the El Toro Library and the El Toro Post Office. I know, this is original research, but it sheds some light on things. I also grew up in Lake Forest/El Toro, the name was changed in 1991 when the City incorporatedCity of Lake Forest Website. There was a big dispute over the name change when it occured. The only high school in the City is named El Toro as well. Rmahoney01 (talk) 14:15, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. For my part, I grew up in La Mirada and went to UCI from 2000-2005. I'm aware of the many holdovers of the name "El Toro", like ETHS, El Toro Road, etc. A Google Maps search for "El Toro, CA" pulls up MCAS El Toro, but does show an area near Foothill Ranch called El Toro. For some reason I thought Foothill Ranch was unincorporated but I now know it has been part of Lake Forest since 2000. I see nothing wrong with leaving the redirect as is, but I will make a reference to LF on the El Toro disambiguation page, as well as a {{Redirect}} tag on this page. The Google Maps search you mention does not (at least currently) exist. A Google Maps search for [El Toro, CA] yields a marker right in the middle of present-day Lake Forest. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=el%20toro,ca While I respect and appreciate Kuyabribri's efforts to create/enhance this article, it should be noted that Google Maps is not the arbiter of proper place names (or place name redirects on Wikipedia) by any means. Beyond what I mention above, the bit mentioned about "an area near Foothill Ranch called El Toro" isn't relevant because Foothill Ranch didn't exist when the town called El Toro incorporated as the City of Lake Forest. Those areas were later annexed (though still aren't commonly called Lake Forest), but at the time were open space. In any case, the redirect from El Toro should undoubtedly remain directed at Lake Forest. And while I haven't lived there for a few years, until recently the post office still said "El Toro, CA 92630" outside. As Google Maps still does.68.5.91.1 (talk) 07:28, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

The name change was a HUGE controversy. I was in middle school at the time, at Serrano Intermediate, which is in the forest, next to the "lakes." I couldn't understand it -- why name the whole city after a couple man-made lakes that only property owners with houses adjacent to it could enjoy? Everyone I knew was baffled when it passed the ballot. To this day I still refer to my hometown as "El Toro." An inline link from the article about the controversy to the city article as the location is appropriate, but it is not germane to link from the article about the city.
