Palace or manor ? edit

I have a question: the photo caption is for Chodkiewicz palace, whereas the reference refers to it as Kretinga manor; this reference is where the first-telephone-line info comes from. Is there some way to disambiguate this. Would like to add more info about the manor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Novickas (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure about the "manor", my understanding of English is that "manor" is a large country house and one does not build a manor in a town, like Kretinga. --Lysytalk 14:46, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Not sure what else we should call it; "palace" generally refers to the residence of a formally designated ruler; it's not a castle, since it's not fortified. Most English towns of any population over about 1,000 or so contained a manor used as the residence of local nobility, these were often referred to as "X hall" or "x house", ie Dyrham Park or Hardwick Hall, etc. Novickas 15:52, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
But then you have plenty of other "palaces" throughout Lithuania, particularly in Vilnius but also in other places. There's always a problem in naming keep vs castle vs palace vs manor etc. How about e.g. Tyszkiewicz palace in Palanga ? Or Pilsrundāle palace in Latvia ? I'm not sure if England is a really good example for our purposes, as they had different situation and they tend to use "castle" name for some buildings that we would rather call a palace. --Lysytalk 16:03, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Parentheses in the template edit

Another more general question: why are there parentheses around (location) and (coat of arms)? This is seen in other LT and Polish city wikisites as well, but not otherwise. They might be vestigial items that have been inadvertently propagated from site to site, via a template maybe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Novickas (talkcontribs)

I think you are right, but this belongs to the template talk Template_talk:Infobox_City_Lithuania. --Lysytalk 14:48, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
will take a look at this.Novickas 15:52, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Changes as of October 10th edit

Did some rewordings; also changed the picture caption to "Kretinga Manor", since that is what it is called in the official (.lt) websites. Alas, the Kretinga Manor website itself has disappeared, so took it out of the references. Novickas 14:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Tiškevičius versus Tyshkevich edit

The reasoning behing the reversion is as follows: 1) a Google search of Tyshkevich Kretinga turned up 4 results, while a Google search of Tiškevičius Kretinga turned up 248 results; 2) the logic that surnames should be changed to reflect the usage of the ruling power at the time would, if consistently carried out, result in many thousands of changes to the English Wikipedia entries about Lithuania, Poland, Ashkenazi Jews, and other Eastern European and Asian countries.

If you feel strongly about this particular issue, you could create a separate page about the family, where its long history could be discussed. Also, you could email Kretinga Manor, which holds a number of archival documents about the family, and possibly obtain documentation of their birth, baptismal, and death certificates.

In the meantime, a compromise could be effected by adding the alternate names in parentheses: Tiškevičius (Russian: x, Polish: y).
