Move proposal

The result was not moved, both because of a majority in opposition, and because the supporters are factually incorrect about the definition of "athlete" and "athletics". Nyttend (talk) 13:46, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Kevin Sullivan (athlete) → Kevin Sullivan (runner) – This is not the only Kevin Sullivan who is an athlete, so this designation is too broad. Kevin Sullivan (wrestler) is also an athlete, for example. "Runner" is more specific to what this man is known for, and it is shorter (6 char) than athlete (7 char). I was unable to find out this man's middle name, otherwise that would also be an alternative. 184.146.159.100 (talk) 03:37, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- Support WP:PRECISE insufficient precision to identify subject, per talk:athlete -- 70.51.46.146 (talk) 04:29, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose There should be no confusion between a runner of the 1990s and a Professional wrestler of the 1970s and 80s. I don't want to denigrate professional wrestlers--I make my living in professional wrestling, we spend time promoting the athleticism of our performers. The majority of wikipedia contributions are related to track and field otherwise known around the world as athletics. I know both people in both realms well. There is no confusion of the athletics participation of the two. We do not refer to professional wrestlers as athletes on wikipedia. In this case, it is not a close call. Another editor has launched an attack on the use of "athlete" as the common disambiguator for the sport of athletics. This suggestion seems like a part of that major deviation from our style, making this a potential test case for the push against common style. I oppose. This is not that kind of case. - That is not the opinion that resulted in the discussion at talk:athlete, clearely all sportspeople in "active" sports are atheletes, so this disambiguation cannot be used whenever another sportsperson exists with the same name. -- 70.51.46.146 (talk) 06:15, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose as semi-laughable. Kevin Sullivan (athlete) describes Kevin Sullivan, an athlete. The article athelete fits in Category:Sports competitors, Category:Sports terminology and Category:Sportspeople. The article on Professional wrestling fits in: Category:Professional wrestling, Category:Performing arts, Category:Mock combat, Category:Sports entertainment, Category:Professional wrestling slang and Category:Theatrical combat. The ONLY question here is whether "runner" is a more helpful description for this Kevin Sullivan than "athlete". Gregkaye ✍♪ 09:24, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- The reason I mentioned it earlier is because there is a move afoot to try to change the common disambiguator for all people participating in athletics, to something more creative or descriptive. I suggest that without a broader discussion of the projects involved (which I tried to make at Wikiproject:Athletics happen but got no traction) we shouldn't be making a broad decision like this via individual RfDs like this. (Athlete) is currently in use in hundreds to thousands of articles. By the way, the suggestion of no redirect makes this proposal more likely to cause greater confusion to find the correct article. - It involves all sports, so should be discussed at WT:SPORTS, not Athletics. The current disambiguation does not work, as outlined by the nominator. "athlete" in all varieties of English means sportsperson per talk:athlete , so any broad discussion should occur at WT:SPORTS. -- 70.51.46.146 (talk) 06:13, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
- 70.51.46.146, What do you mean "does not work"? There is an article for Kevin Sullivan (athlete), an athlete and an article for "Kevin Sullivan (wrestler)" who engages in mock combat. Gregkaye ✍♪ 07:04, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
