Celtic directorship offer

"He was given a chance to become a director at the club but he refused as he was an Evangelical who attended the Church of Christ."

If the implication is that he didn't want to be a director of a largely Roman Catholic club, why would that be a problem if he was already happily playing for them? If Finlay, his fiancee, was Catholic, even more reason to think there could be no sectarian dilemma for him. If she and her father were protestant and the directorship (as seems to be implied) was offered on the basis of his influence at Celtic, that's further reason why it would be odd for him to feel he had to refuse on the grounds of religion.
