First or second to fly in Canada

edit

The article has been changed to say that McCurdy was the second person to fly in Canada rather than the first. My understanding, which is confirmed by the reference linked from the article, is that Baldwin's flight was in New York making McCurdy's the first one in Canada.

Does anyone have a reference for him being second? --Cjrother 02:35, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

J.A.D. McCurdy flew the Silver Dart in Baddeck in 1909, this first flight of the Dart was the first flight of a powered aircraft in the entire British Empire, not just Canada, and therefore should be noted as such. By this precident, he was certainly not the second to fly in Canada, but rather the first in the Empire. --VonVeezelsnider (talk) 07:25, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have changed that now. Cjrother 23:15, 20 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Article name

edit

If he was "known as Douglas" McCurdy, then this article probably belongs at Douglas McCurdy in accordance with WP:COMMONNAME. Does anybody have any further comments on how he was generally known? Usage in various types of sources?

Furthermore, in any case it is totally unacceptable that that Douglas McCurdy link is still red. See WP:redirect. Gene Nygaard 13:30, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Has anyone access to his birth certificate? It seems that Mr. McCurdy's grave says the second name is Alexander whereas the family's book says Archibald. However, that could be an error on the part of the person ordering the grave stone. The birth certificate ought to govern and should be listed as a reference in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nelson4P (talkcontribs) 21:41, 20 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Canada as British in the 1900s

edit

The article says he was born in Nova Scotia and was the first British subject to fly an aircraft in the British Empire. Were people living in what is now known as Canada still British subjects then? What is the British Empire? Is Commonwealth meant? --Cornellier (talk) 03:24, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
