This is a subjective and superfluously generous article, created and edited almost entirely (apparently) by Jeffrey Kent, the 'content editor' for the Extreme Ice Survey that James Balog apparently heads (http://www.extremeicesurvey.org/index.php/team/). I presume 'Jeffkent' was paid (not to mention by foundation and/or federal (taxpayer) funds) to enter this information, which I understand to be against Wikipedia policy. Those of you who know Wikipedia policy more intimately should be able to confirm or refute this.

In any case, I have sincere doubts about Balog's scientific expertise and credentials, evidenced at least by his numerous erroneous statements in his Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross. Hence, if Wikipedia strives for accuracy, it would be wise to tone down these effectively self-proclaimed accolades. Since I have no desire to undermine Balog publicly, but have a scientific responsibility to refute false claims of expertise and the propagation of erroneous interpretation, I request that Wikipedia remove this biography so I don't have to admonish him publicly. His erroneous statements should by attributed appropriately -- to an amateur, rather than an appropriately trained climate scientist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dugdart (talkcontribs) 23:22, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I thought the article was pretty interesting and informative (I don't know anything about Mr. Balog, but I am going to hear him speak tonight and wanted some background). However, after reading the criticism of the unsigned "Dugdart" above, I would note that the article has no in-line citations or references whatsoever. But it still seems worthwhile and worth keeping, but it needs some references. There was a recent Wiki effort to summarily remove thousands of unsourced bios, I hope this does not get removed, but it does need some attention in that area. --Mdukas (talk) 01:25, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • I am a degreed engineer. This article reads like a vanity piece on the back of a book cover and should be pulled until someone writes an unbiased one. I also heard Mr. Balog interviewed on Maher's "Real Time" and it is obvious he has no college training in the sciences - meteorology or climatology. That said, I was impressed with Mr. Balog's accomplishments and photography and hope he continues his excellent work, he just shouldn't mislead people about having a science academic background - his work stands up well on its own merit. • I heard Balog being interviewed on BBC then watched his presentation on TED.com about glaciers melting away. I would agree that his Wiki page sounds a bit like a resume and is lacking in references. Nonetheless, because there is so little being talked about climate change and how humanity is messing up the Earth's ecosystem on which all life is dependent, I believe, James Balog's Wiki page should definitively remain. While the page could be improved especially with citations, we must have it so that people wanting to know more about climate change and Balog's other work can find the information they need.Eravian (talk) 17:56, 27 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Balog (pronounced BAY-log)" - For the record, Balog is a Hungarian surname (meaning "left-handed") and its original pronunciation is closer to BALL-log. Of course it's entirely possible that James Balog himself pronounces his name in a different way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.92.141.130 (talk) 21:39, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

This biography is inappropriate. edit

The entire page should be severely edited or removed altogether. This is not a personal website, and should not read as one. As it is, the article would serve as an excellent example of what a wikipedia biography shouldn't be. I was very surprised to find such an article here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.102.214.139 (talk) 03:42, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Considering that this person exist and has some existing reputation, i would strongly recommend not to delete the page, but to edit it. At least, this guy has photographical skills that can't be denied. Ejacquet (talk) 20:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
