Why is the postcode being changed? I once lived in Bourtreehill, part of Irvine, and the postcode was KA11. Douglasnicol 22:23, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looks like both are valid according to Postcode List SFC9394 22:50, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's maybe partially been due to the fact that we have Irvine as the town, and Irvine New Town which also encompasses Dreghorn, Bourtreehill and Broomlands among others. Maybe before the New Town, only one post code was in use. Douglasnicol 21:08, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Postcodes were not introduced into Ayrshire until after Irvine was designated a New Town in 1966. 85.211.187.193 22:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why is there a "famous residents" section and a "Famous resident and visitors" section? Would it not be better to have a "Famous Resisdents" section and a "Famous visitors" section? Chris 10:12, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

It used to be split into seperate Residents and Visitors sections, I'll correct it. Douglasnicol 14:39, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have amended the page to have a proper section on the Royal Burgh of Irvine. This one fact seemed not to be as clear as it ought to be. I know that Royal Burgh families such as mine were proud of this civic distinction - ie. long established Irvine families living here prior to the so called 'New Town'. The loss of the old Town Council in 1975 was likewise not popular with more than a few in the town.

The description of the old photograph in the section on the harbour should be amended. It states Irvine 'Old Town' circa 1876. It shows the old Tolbooth built in the High Street. The Tolbooth was replaced by the present Towns House in 1861. In John Strawhorn's 'The History of Irvine: Royal Burgh and New Town' this photograph is described at page 133 as being from the early 19th century. 85.211.187.193 22:30, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Knock yourself out and amend it if you like, it's what Wiki's there for after all. I'll admit I'm not that knowledgeable on Irvine's distant past, I'm responsible for a large part of the harbour entry. It is also kinda difficult to put in a NPOV way just how much was done to Irvine in the new town development as apparently a lot of people felt that large parts of Irvine were ruined by it. Douglasnicol 16:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have inserted a reference to Nicola Sturgeon, the present Deputy First Minister. It seems appropriate that any Irvine born members of the Scottish Executive should be mentioned. GraemeMoughan 21:09, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:IrvLionIrv copy.png edit

Image:IrvLionIrv copy.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Morton Research edit

There's no reference to Templars in this article. According to recent research, Kilwinning and Irvine contained "the highest number of Templar properties in Scotland". I think this should be represented in the article somehow. TheDelineator (talk) 23:31, 30 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've just added some Morton citations, but can't find anything on the Templars. The quotation you supplied does not get any hits on Google beyond this page. If you can supply a link or a source I will do my best to include them. Remember, the source has to be reliable! 86.140.135.128 (talk) 03:06, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hitler edit

The present article says "Irvine Harbour was a prime target for Adolf Hitler's invasion of the British Isles, being a major boating district and also in near vicinity to the ICI weapons development.". If there is evidence for this surely it should be cited, otherwise speaking as a former curator living and working in the town, it seems rather outlandish to me. Robertforsythe (talk) 13:12, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The whole west coast was potentially a landing zone for the Germans, hence the reason for extensive anti tank barriers on the Ayrshire coast. Irvine would have been ideal. - AyrshireNeil (talk) 14:40, 31 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Evonium and Irvine? edit

Hector Boece located Evonium in the Lochaber area, so Evonium couldn't have been located at Irvine as well. Also, there is no historical association with the Evonium legend and Irvine. --Irvineite (talk) 19:26, 18 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

You may in fact be right but it is not our job to weigh up what is true and what isn't. The story was reported nationally by the senior writer of The Scotsman in the Scotland on Sunday newspaper, and I do remember it in the local newspapers at the time so it is notable for inclusion here. I also think the wiki entry makes it clear that Martin doesn't necessarily believe Evonium existed but merely mentioned that Irvine should be considered in any debate about its possible existence and location. Which I think is fair enough. The first part of the entry is a little tabloidy and poorly written though, but so is the whole article which is also too long for a small port town of less than 50,000 people. 176.251.64.239 (talk) 02:53, 21 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Writer A. J. Morton has suggested it could have been located in Irvine - AyrshireNeil (talk) 14:38, 31 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
