According to the institute's web-site (http://vir.nw.ru/history/heads.htm), Vavilov was Head from 1920 to 1940, not 1936.

Number of starved botanists edit

The first cited source (Washington Post) states that nine botanists died, while the article later claims 28 deaths, citing sun-sentinel.com, which is unfortunately geo-blocked for me. Meanwhile, the article Pavlovsk_Experimental_Station states that twelve starved. 28 seems suspicious as it's also the duration of the siege (28 months), so there might be a misunderstanding involved somewhere.
