Katrina

 I think that the comparison to Betsy is quite valid.

In the wake of Katrina it is, if for no better reason than to show the highly questionable results in the so-called "official" Katrina report. I've heard countless times the mantra that had Katrina taken the course Betsy took, it would have been SO much worse! Excuse me? According to the "official report" Katrina was just that, a "Betsy" which swerved slightly east instead of west. The alleged winds in the official report show Katrina as having max windspeeds at landfall comparable (if not slightly LOWER) than those of Betsy, and both were enormous in size and came from the same direction. This leaves one to conclude that either those who say that had Katrina taken a Betsy path it would have truly been doomsday for New Orleans have some serious egg on their face because Betsy WAS a Katrina that took such a path; OR perhaps, just perhaps, they've UNDER classified Katrina. In view of the WIND as well as water damage I've seen, it is almost certainly the former. Trivia section

Removed the trivia section. I had put in the statement about loops in Betsy's track at some point. The information about Katrina's track being similar seems confusing, since Katrina originated in the Bahamas, Betsy formed much farther out in the Atlantic. I'm preserving the deleted section here:

Unusually, Betsy's track included not one but two complete loops.
Betsy is comparable to 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which followed a similar path but caused more extensive damage and casualties in New Orleans. Numerous other highly-destructive hurricanes, including Hurricane Andrew, the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane, and the 1926 Miami Hurricane, have also followed very similar paths.

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone would like to add a section somewhere about the ship Amaryllis that was washed up on the beach of Singer Island during this storm? Popular Culture References

I've added a reference to Betsy in popular song to the Betsy page twice, and it was deleted both times. Just wondering why. Pages on other serious topics contain references of this sort-- see, for instance, the page on President James Garfield's assassin, Charles Guiteau, which lists two songs which reference Guiteau in the "Trivia" section. So why not here?

We consider it not very notable, first, and not important enough for an article on the storm. It could, however, go into an article on Tropical cyclones in popular culture (if created, which has been proposed as a moved version of List of fictional tropical cyclones). Damage USD Amounts

The adjusted amount of damage caused by the storm is off by about 1-2 billion from the top highlight box to the main article text. I don't know which one is correct. I just wanted to point out the inconstancy. C. Kilpatrick 10:27, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Inconsistency?

Lead para: "As it was mistakenly known as the first hurricane to cause over a billion dollars in damage..."

"Impact" section: "Betsy was the first hurricane to cause damage in excess of $1 billion..."

Which is correct? And if the "mistakenly" one is, then why was the mistake made?

"Mistakenly"

The lede of this article says Betsy was mistakenly considered the first hurricane to cause over a billion dollars in damage. The question is, which hurricane caused a billion dollars in damage before Betsy? HurricaneFan25 21:13, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Diane 55. However, it's debated which one is the true first billion dollar storm. With inflation, Diane reached $1 billion total before Betsy caused $1 billion. Betsy is the true first, especially since the project doesn't deal with inflation any more, but there are sources that would support Diane. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:30, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
