Governor of New Jersey? edit

I removed a claim in the first paragraph that he was a failed candidate for governor of New Jersey. It is not mentioned later in the article. I am aware that, during the war, he claimed that if he survived he would eventually become Governor of New Jersey and later President of the United States. If someone can provide a source for the claim, it can be restored. Hal Jespersen 17:00, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • You might first try to read the books mentioned in the background resources that's where they're mentioned, also newspaper accounts in the 1870s (New Jersey Herald, Sussex Register, etc.), he attempted to run for governor in the 1870s, I always screw up the dates between his two failed attempts at congress and his one gubernatorial attempt but I remember one was in 1876, another in 1880 and one was a bit earlier, I think. The article isn't done, that's why you don't see a mention of it. I started it almost 18 months ago, and just never got around to finishing it. Once I get back from my business trip this week, sure, I'll finish it.—ExplorerCDT 02:33, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, thanks. It isn't possible for every Wikipedia reader to read every Ref listed by others, so the article needs to be internally consistent at least to avoid questions. Hal Jespersen 14:38, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've read this but not sure the exact source. Great-great-grandfather of CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
