Mario Party

I seem to remember a mini game in Mario Party 5 called "hotel mario" or "hotel goomba" It was a puzzle game that sound similar to this, is this worth noting in the article? I don't have any proof they are related, but I am curious if anyone knows.Mwv2 18:41, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Breaking the fourth wall comment

The Mario line "If you need instructions", while being an Internet meme of a sort, also has him talking to the player, therefore it breaks the fourth wall. I'm just saying it here - there's no need to put this in the article. --Addict 2006 15:23, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Hotel Mario/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Although there's been a lot of activity recently, nothing which affects stability is apparent. The article is broad in scope, surprisingly so for such an obscure game, neutral, the images have fair use rationales. It's almost good-to-go, please have a look at the following:

  • The in-game movie and gameplay screenshots are both weighing in at 200kb a piece, could you reduce their sizes please?
    • I will soon replace the screenshots with new ones taken by myself. Their file sizes should be smaller than those of the current images. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Lead section - it's just a weency bit short (even though it's a short article), it would be good to see a reference to it being called a cheap Elevator Action clone.
    • The lead could of course be longer, but I haven't been able to figure what sort of information could still be added there. Thus far only one notable website has compared the game to Elevator Action. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Still the lead - "who must find Princess Peach (referred to as Princess Toadstool in the manual)" Is Peach referred to as Toadstool in the game, or just in the manual, or what? What I would suggest doing is just calling her Toadstool and linking to her character article, if that's how the game refers to her, and remove the bracket.
    • In the game she's actually just called "the Princess" by other characters, so I decided to change the name to Toadstool on ground of the booklet. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • The 'Story' subheading isn't necessary, the section is already referred to as plot and setting and there isn't enough text in the setting alone to necessitate it being kept separately.
  • Why do you shut the doors? If this is never explained then it would be worth saying so and citing it within gameplay.
    • Neither the game nor the manual give any reason for closing the doors. I'm not quite sure what could be used as a reference for this. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • On the same tack, the Wii Fanboy piece contains criticism of this apparently unexplained activity, could you add some details in the second paragraph of reception on that angle?
    • My original idea was to reserve this particular paragraph for the cut scenes, but I'll see if I can fit the door issue somewhere. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

That's it, good job on this ("I hope sthee made lotsa spaghetti"). Someoneanother 20:41, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

In addition to the already mentioned changes, I added some info regarding a recently posted IGN review. --Crockster (talk) 23:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • "On the last stage of each hotel the player faces one of the Koopalings.[1]" and does what?
  • The door closing thing will be something which sticks in readers' heads - "what is the purpose of doing this?" If you can find no other mention of this than the Wii Fanboy article then please use that. The purpose or complete lack of purpose is a gap which needs filling one way or the other.
  • For that last paragraph of reception, the Wii fanboy piece actually goes into more detail than the last, specifically youtube poops and live-action renditions - both of those could do with mentioning.
    • I'm not very sure if more information should be included about the Internet videos, as anything related to Youtube poop is usually deleted from articles such as this and CD-i games from The Legend of Zelda series. The mention of live-action adaptations on the Wii Fanboy page pretty much refers to just one video. --Crockster (talk) 14:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
  • In the lead, if you can add some additional info on the boss encounters to gameplay then it could likewise be mentioned in the lead. For the reception aspect of the lead, the fact that it involves closing doors is mentioned by both Game Daily and Wii Fanboy. Someoneanother 18:51, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
    • I added one sentence about the Koopaling battles in the lead. I also replaced "simple style of gameplay" with the objective of closing doors as that describes better what is mentioned in the sources following the sentence. --Crockster (talk) 14:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your work, there is one final thing which I should have picked up before: the second Screw Attack cite (TremendousTom) is a personal blog post and can't be used as a reliable source, it needs replacing with alternative cites. The Zelda fansite is not something I was particularly comfortable with, but it was used in CD-i games from The Legend of Zelda series, a GA, so.. *shrugs*. The CDi fansites much better sources, one was apparently featured in Retro Gamer magazine and the other was given a nod in a gadget mag, although they're still not ideal they are a cut above Joe Bloggs' personal blog. That Screw Attack one does need replacing though, and ref #25 does not list the name of the website like the other cites. It should be ready to pass once those are sorted out. Someoneanother 23:32, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

The blog has now been replaced with links to the SNES-CD article, the Wired Magazine video, and this page from Interactive Dreams: [1]. Thanks for your contributions as the reviewer, I really appreciate the fact that someone started reviewing the article practically right after it was nominated. --Crockster (talk) 00:58, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

If I said there was a bucket in my house, and you came over to look for the bucket, after finding it, would you still ask for a newspaper article to prove I had a bucket in my house? *facepalm* 207.28.147.2 (talk) 19:19, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Irrelevant. There is a huge difference between physical objects and encyclopedia articles; one needs only reliable online and/or print sources to prove its validity, and the other would require much scientific and/or philosophical analysis just to prove its existence. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 22:18, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
So even though YTP is big on YouTube and this is one of it sources used, you need recognition in order to prove it? How will that happen? Type in "YouTube Poop" on Google and see how many search results come up. And YouTube Poop's popularity on YouTube is valid enough to say it is true! So many have done it! 68.194.242.39 (talk) 21:21, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
And when you say "notable news source," do we seriously have to have a news station report on it just to prove its existence? So if I wrote a book just now, would NBC have to say my book exists? Or would I have to advertise it on Amazon? Which one? 68.194.242.39 (talk) 21:24, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

In response to Cat's Tuxedo: YouTube Poop videos, which Hotel Mario is one of the foundational sources of material, have garnered millions of views and spawned an abundance of derivatives since then (such as the MLG montage parodies). The only reason Hotel Mario has any level of notoriety today is because the series was revived via these YouTube Poop videos. Although I cannot provide empirical evidence, I guarantee you that the grand majority of people who know of the existence of Hotel Mario today do so because they first saw a YouTube poop video parodying it.

As an aside, this isn't the first time Wikipedia has not recognized the cultural relevance of YouTube/new media (see my comments about The Needle Drop in the article about Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly Album"). Although I understand that an encyclopedia is supposed to strive for objectivity by providing secondary sources, it places an undue amount of emphasis on more traditional forms of media such as print, radio, and television, in an era in which the internet is rapidly becoming the dominant source of entertainment. In my uneducated opinion, this constitutes undue bias and elitism.

  1. You're resurrecting a 2 year old discussion - nobody cares about it anymore, or it would have been acted upon prior to this.
  2. You disprove the strength of your own argument by saying "I cannot provide empirical evidence" - in that case nothing you say, despite being prefixed by your "guarantee", is worth anything at all. That's exactly why we insist upon reliable sourcing. Chaheel Riens (talk) 20:41, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Clearly I care about it Chaheel Riens (1>0, thus disqualifying your claim that "nobody cares"), and the only reason I am posting about it is because I just became aware of it now. Not being able to provide empirical evidence does not necessarily invalidate an argument; I'm simply being honest about the fact that I don't care enough to take time out of my day to methodically substantiate my claims with statistical data for what is ultimately part of a very trivial discussion. A more accurate statement would have been "I don't think it's necessary for me to take the time to provide you with empirical data about whether or not Hotel Mario's modern notoriety is a consequence of the emergence of the YouTube Poop phenomenon", but that sounded a bit too wordy so I went with what I said above. Nevertheless, I will entertain you with the following:

Princess Toadstool's voice

Does anyone know who voiced Princess Toadstool and who voiced the other characters? Toadstool's voice sounds a lot like Jeannie Elias or Tracey Moore. StevenMario (talk) 22:26, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Jocelyn Benford voiced the Princess while Marc Graue voiced Mario, Luigi and Bowser. It says so in the article. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 02:00, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

GA Reassessment

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Hotel Mario/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

This article was promoted almost ten years ago, when out GA standards were far more lax than they are today. As most GAs from this period don't really age well, I am concerned this no longer meets the criteria. Here are some of the issues:

  • The sourcing is a primary concern of mine. First, almost all of the gameplay section is sourced to the manual rather than reliable sources. Second, there are several unreliable sources: #20 is N-Sider (a site known for speculation and falsifying information); #23 is a Zelda fansite; #25 and #30 are someone's Blogspot; and #41 is ScrewAttack. There's also some link rot, like with #26.
  • The reception section is subpar; it has very few contemporary reviews and most of it follows the "A of B said C" formula (WP:RECEPTION). Also, some of it is just random: "When Electronic Gaming Monthly named Mario the greatest video game character in 2005, they considered Hotel Mario his most embarrassing moment." This has absolutely no meaning unless it is explained why this is "embarrassing".
  • Prose is also iffy in places. The lead, for example, has two single-sentence paragraphs (the second of which is an awkward run-on).

JOEBRO64 23:21, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Hey Joebro, this isn't an article I've ever worked on, but I'd like to take a crack at fixing this. I'll have a look over the sources and prose, and maybe I can call one of our professional copyeditor friends to give it a look afterward. Red Phoenix talk 03:49, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Here's what I have so far:
  • I had to strip out a lot of references. On top of that, unless I can find the GameTrailers videos, I'll have to strip that out too. There was a lot in here we would consider unreliable.
  • I also trimmed back all the separate pages of the manual being cited. That's just excessive, clutter, and deceptive when seeing all the reference numbers it left behind.
  • That being said, I've looked at the remaining sources and added one or two more I found that I know are reliable. I think we can stitch together a competent, GA-quality article out of them in a matter of a few days. Right now I don't have much going except to finish a section for Sonic Team and a pending GA review for Tectoy, so I should be able to commit to this. I never actually had heard of Hotel Mario until this GAR, but I'd heard of the CD-i Nintendo games and I'll find this quite an interesting topic to write on.
Red Phoenix talk 04:34, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@TheJoebro64: Have another look at this. I'm not sure if it's now too short to meet the broadness criterion, but it looks a heck of a lot better. Let me know what you think. Red Phoenix talk 15:11, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Red Phoenix: Gosh, it looks so much better now. I'll make a few tweaks in a little while. It looks like the article may need a bit of copyediting but overall delisting might not be necessary. Nice work. JOEBRO64 20:30, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Popcornduff: I hate to bother you, but maybe you could do a quick copyedit on this article? Copyediting isn't my strength, but you're one of the best copyeditors I know and this isn't a very big article. I'll throw in a barnstar if it's any incentive ;) . Red Phoenix talk 21:21, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
No barnstar required - flattery is better. I'll take a look at this when I get time later in the week (on vacation atm). Popcornduff (talk) 01:04, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

@TheJoebro64: It looks like Popcornduff has completed his copyedit. Are we good to close the GAR and update the talk page of the article? Red Phoenix talk 02:57, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, it looks much more like a GA now. Closing. JOEBRO64 12:15, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Receptions

This game along with the Zelda CDI games initially got mixed reviews, but then later got panned by modern critics and gamers alike in following years. What’s going on?! When I initially experience those CDI games, I used to thought they firstly came out as worst reviewed by the critics, like always, before I eventually learned they were criticized as mediocre to begin with. This is crazy, it’s like "make up your mind people! Are they mediocre or bad?!", since I know they were, even today, the worst games ever made! I’m confused now. I feel like I’m in The Twilight Zone, where none of those situations make any sense whatsoever!

So that’s it. Presumably, this must be the old games’ qualities are how they would later be criticized as the worst ever made by contemporary reviewers. All because they find them outdated because of today’s qualities we have, which are better, right? It’s that reason why of this? Or am I wrong? 184.90.145.149 (talk) 16:15, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
