Expanding edit

Needs it. One of the highest scoring aces in the Allied Air Forces needs a better page than this. Dapi89 (talk) 15:18, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Accessdate edit

The Gazette has actaully completely revamped its url scheme within the last year, and there's no guarantee that they won't do so again. Using the template should mean we can fix the generated urls centrally if and when this happens, but WP:CITE says an accessdate should be included for all online resources - no exceptions. It is possible to use some slightly different parameters if you really insist on all the dates being in the same format, but the templates generally render the accessdate in this form, even if eg publication dates are given in other forms. For the sake of conformity, it there a method to render the date in the same format as the rest of the article? FWiW, why do we need the cite template at all, see many discussions about the use of templates in Citing Sources. Bzuk (talk) 13:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC).Reply
I've switched the formatting now - though I've never seen anyone comment on it before, even on articles going through FAC. The sue of this particular template is precisely to enable these references to be maintained more easily. As I say the gazette has completely chagned it's website before, I've fixed a high-proportion of the references that were broken by the last change, though I know there are still some out there which are broken. Issue number, page number and whether or not it's a supplement are the parameters required to uniquely identify any required page, and generate the correct url (publication date isn't actually required, but obviously it's good practise to record it). Next time the url scheme changes we can fix hundreds of references simply by tweaking the template so it generates theurl in the new format, without even having to know which articles are affected. The alternative is to get a bot search a database dump for articles containing the string www.gazettes-online.co.uk, and manually fix every single article it turns up 9and believe me, that's deeply tedious). Freytag edit

According to '2nd Tactical Air Force Volume Two' by Shores & Thomas, Freytag's claim was made 0823 while McLeod was last seen by his Squadron at 1355.

Freytag's claim matches an air battle 412 and 421 Squadron RCAF had over Nijmegen that morning, during which Flight Officer R. E. Holness was shot down and killed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.72.180.123 (talk) 19:54, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
