Henry Moore Harrington was born April 30, 1849 in Albion, New York. At the age of seven years his parents moved to Coldwater, Michigan. Henry spent his childhood in Coldwater and after his schooling he accepted an appointment to West Point in 1868, having turned down a similar appointment to the Naval Academy. Graduating in June 1872, he was appointed a second lieutenant of cavalry and assigned to Company C of the 7th United States Cavalry, serving under the command of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer. Henry's initial company commander was Captain (Brevet Colonel) Verling K. Hart. Later he served under Captain Thomas W. Custer. At the Battle of the Little Big Horn Captain Custer was designated as aide to his famous brother and Henry found himself in command of Company C during the battle.
After graduation from West Point Henry married Grace Berard, the granddaughter of a West Point professor, who bore him two children between 1873 and 1876.
Henry earned his spurs during the Yellowstone Campaign of 1873 in Montana, and while accompanying Custer on the Black Hills Expedition of 1874.
Henry sat out in May of 1876 along with the rest of the 7th Cavalry for duty in the Yellowstone Country. On June 25th of that year Henry met his fate along with many other soldiers at the "Battle of the Little Big Horn".

This a good start to an article, with plenty of references to follow up, but needs more information. A reader would need to know more about his actions, not just about his postings. His role in the Battle of Little Big Horn and the discovery of his skull are ripe areas for expansion. Edofedinburgh 23:59, 18 March 2007 (UTC) |
