Indeed, the section on Bernstein looks like it was written by someone with a pro-Bernstein/anti-Schonberg agenda. I have toned that down a bit and will be clarifying once I review the source material. When my clarinet teacher gave me a list of required reading, part of which was Harold Schonberg's The Lives of the Great Composers, I was overcome with a feeling of dread. To read about the lives of all those old men surely is misery I thought to myself. This feeling was re-asserted when I picked up the book at the library and read the first page, on Monteverdi. Oh great... another textbook, in addition to those for school, thought I. However, as I delved further into the book, I began to enjoy myself, noticing Schonberg's subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle humor. The personal information about the composers further served to make the book fascinating. I finally gained a greater appreciation for music and those who write it. I learned that all large, informative books are not boring or dull. This book was a revelation in the way I view music criticism.
