Bug

At least some of the platinum calculators had an internal bug in the Internal rate of return algorith. For example, the correct IRR of the following cash flow is 0.20%, but some calculator may give a different result:

-11950
  4000
  3000
  5000

Also, some believe that the original "gold" HP-12c calculator has a stronger case, better keys and is faster than the new platinum model. I don't know if these comments should be included in a "critcism" section.

Vintage HP 12C

I wanted to love the HP 12CP (Platinum). I really did.

I finally left the social service field to begin a new career in real estate. I dug out my old HP 12C from college which I actually never used. After downloading the manuals and familiarizing myself with it, I can see where the rabid devotion for this device comes from. HP produced a truly remarkable product!

Sadly, the production values have clearly been lost. I purchased my HP 12C in the late 80's or early 90's. The keys give excellent tactile feedback, the display is still clear, and the rubber pads are intact.

When I saw the ads for the HP 12CP, I thought this could only be making something already good even better. Yeah, right! Half the times, the keys being pressed don't even register. YOu can barely see the orange text against the silver background. I do apprectiate the improved speed, but that's about the only addition of positive note IMHO. For the most part, I still use my original and keep the 12CP as backup.

6502 core

There was an unsubstantiated claim that the later Generalplus chip uses an 8502 core - I've rectified that. I don't see that there could even be such a thing as an 8502 core, as the 8502 chip itself uses a 6502 core. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.114.43.10 (talk) 13:53, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

Edit to add: OK, I see a source of confusion. Sunplus, a predecessor company of Generalplus, sold a microcontroller called the 8502 with a 6502 core. This four digit number is unrelated to the 8502 made by MOS Technology and/or Commodore Semiconductor Group. We see from Eric's page that Generalplus use quite different numbering for their microcontrollers, although one of their offerings might be the same thing as was previously known as the Sunplus 8502. ARM versions now appear to be available.

There may be some confusion here as my linked page cites ARM versions in 2008 - whihc conflicts with the article.

Brazilian clones
