I have removed the following text from the article as it has remained unsourced for over 2 years.

One of the troops from the British 1st Airborne Division, Lance-Corporal Alan Bell, survived the explosion, and was later arrested by the Italians after making it in to land after a dreadful semi-conscious night in the water floating on debris. Lance-Corporal Bell later told his son that the degaussing equipment that had been used on board H.M.S. Abdiel was powered by two sets of batteries, one active, and one charging. The active battery bank was apparently stood down and changed at midnight each night. In the few seconds the equipment was switched off that night to exercise the change of batteries, the rogue mine was attracted to the hull of the Abdiel and promptly sank it. Lance-Corporal Bell, one of the few 1st Airborne survivors, had been drinking tea on the top deck under the funnels, when suddenly he realised the ship was "gone" (sunk) and he was in the water clutching debris fighting for his life.{{Citation needed|date=October 2010}}
