Around 1958 I went to the Los Angeles Tennis Club to watch round-robin matches that the Kramer pros were putting on. I've found documentation for this tournament somewhere but I can't be bothered to find it again. One of the two days that I attended, I watched Gonzales, at night, beat Rosewall. I was impressed by Rosewall, who, against Gorgo's overwhelming serve, stood about 3 feet inside the baseline to return it. He returned it, but still lost. a listing of match results by court surface?

After watching Nadal win his 11th French Open, I became curious about how Gonzales did against Rosewall on clay. Gonzales never won a major title on clay, I think, except maybe in doubles, and Rosewall was terrific on clay. I've just glanced at the rivalry results in this article and was surprised to see that Gorgo more than held his own on clay over the first years. It was only towards the end that Kenny was winning just about every time. Not always, but mostly.

We don't have the surface for all 201 matches, but we do have a lot of them. I could try breaking them down. What do you think? Hayford Peirce (talk) 19:09, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Well, I just added them all up and I got 117 for Gorgo and 86 for Kenny. Grrrrrrrrr! I must have double-counted one at some point. I'll have to go back and recount them. But I'll start with the surface with the lowest numbers.... Hayford Peirce (talk) 21:32, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Discrepancy somewhere in my figures for matches on different surfaces

I've just spent a *long* going over the matches played on canvas, and I'm *pretty* certain that they're correct, having checked and rechecked and gone through the list several times. I get the same results as currently shown: they played 76 matches and Gorgo won 51 to 25.

I then put in the results for the seven kinds of surfaces they played on, including including 10 for "unknown" and added them up. I did this *three* times. And I now get results of 85 victories for Ken and 117 for Gorgo. This is one more victory for Gorgo somewhere along the line, and it pushes the total matches figure to 202.

So obviously something is wrong somewhere along the line -- it looks as if I have counted an extra victory for Gonzales that shouldn't be there. (By the way, I checked to make sure that the numbering in the left-hand column, 1 through 201, was correct, and it seems to be.)

Sometime I will try to find the energy to go over all of these figures one more time, but it's certainly a tedious process! I'll try to find some other way of tallying the various surfaces that will give me the correct figures. In the meantime, I am leaving the page as it is.

Found the discrepancy. It was, as I had hoped, in the Grass figures. Gorgo won 22 matches, not 23 as I had said before. So the total matches now come to the correct figure of 201. Hayford Peirce (talk) 00:11, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
