George Washington High School opened in 1927 in the Haughville neighborhood of West Central Indianapolis. It discontinued operations as a high school in 1995 due to dwindling enrollment within IPS. This historic school was revived in 2000 in its current form. During it's glory years, GWHS won numerous high school championships in various sports. I attended GWHS from 1964-1967, graduating a year ahead of schedule. I'm proud to say our school won the state high school basketball and football championship during that era. The Continentals also won countless awards in track and field during this exciting time. 1967 was our 40th anniversary and the year I graduated. I was in the drum and bugle corps and lucky enough to march in the 500 mile parade that year. I also marched around the Indy 500 racetrack before the race that year. It's really funny! Instead of a snare drum I was assigned a base drum to wear. It was one of those flat drums that spun around. Unfortunately, it was real windy that day and all I could to to keep the thing on my shoulders at the time. If that wasn't bad enough, our entire band kept drifting down to the bottom of the racetrack marching through the turns because they were extremely steep to say the least. It's been 43 years (2010) since I graduated from high school. Little did I know at that time I would never see any of my classmates again. We're all so anxious to get out of school we don't stop to think how very precious our high school years are at the time. I regret to say, many Washington High School students lost their lives in the Vietnam War. As with many of you who read this commentary, there are some things you would change about your life if you had the foresight to see things as they now are in our corrupt world. That's why I became a minister. I finally realized how very short life really is and the fact that each of us must make our amends before we take that last breath here on earth. Washington High School was a wonderful experience for me. There wasn't all the craziness that goes in in our schools today. Girls had to wear skirts and boys had to have their shirts tucked in their pants. Makeup and excessive jewelry wasn't allowed. If one cussed or played hooky he or she was expelled from school. One couldn't chew gum or talk back to the teacher. By enlarge, everyone minded their manners knowing full well the rule of law would catch up with them in the end. In today's world the student rules the roost and the rule of law is virtually non-existent. It doesn't surprise me how evil things have become! If anyone knows anything concerning BIBLE PROPHECY, then he or she knows full well America is doomed to fail. That be as it may, I will always treasure the stern morals Washington High School teachers instilled in me during that era. It's too bad our children and theirs couldn't have lived back then.
