WP:INDIA Banner/Uttarakhand workgroup Addition

edit

Note: {{WP India}} Project Banner with Uttarakhand workgroup parameters was added to this article talk page because the article falls under Category:Uttarakhand or its subcategories. Should you feel this addition is inappropriate , please undo my changes and update/remove the relavent categories to the article -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 13:26, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

This article could use some work on it so it makes more sense. For example the sentence in the second paragraph, "The canal is primarily an irrigation canal, although parts of it were also used for navigation mainly of its construction material." doesn't sound right.

I'm no expert on Wikipedia nor of Indian topics and don't even know how to properly submit a request for editing so forgive me if this is the wrong place.Jerryel (talk) 17:10, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stop reverting the word ganga

edit

The proper name of the river is Ganga, NOT Ganges. Please stop reversing the edit. Infact the project sanctioned by the Indian government is called the "Ganga Canal". Please stop vandalising the page— Preceding unsigned comment added by Heloworld321 (talkcontribs)

Both names are used by the Indian government, and by geographers in India and around the world, so both names are appropriate on Wikipedia. Mr. Credible (talk) 19:06, 15 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

It would be most interesting to know how the construction of the canal was paid for under the Company's rule, also the later post-Company works, and the general running and maintenance of the canal. Also its financial and economic effects. Seadowns (talk) 23:56, 23 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Seadowns: Some of it is explained in Company_rule_in_India#Canals. For more details, you might want to look at Canal irrigation in British India, by Ian Stone, Cambridge University Press. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 00:23, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
PS I do have that book. When I have some more time, I'll see if I can make a little summary here. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 00:23, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have now seen a long, detailed paper on the net in which Cautley defends himself for constructing the canal at the cost of £750k against a Company critic who said he could have done it for £75k. He makes clear his motive, to "bring plenty". Seadowns (talk) 17:22, 25 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
