I was present at that meeting in 1972 in Geelong. From my memory it was a pretty tame affair. I don't remember McManus being heckled, nor do I recall the comment about his age and birth control. (This was a meeting for Geelong Secondary students at Geelong College ). kingteesdale

Frank McManus (Australian politician)Frank McManus — Important Australian politician for several years, clearly more important than the other two who are not far above the threshhold of notability, a rather obscure baseball player and a UK MP for only 4 years. PatGallacher (talk) 03:18, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. The two politicians have a similar number of incoming links, and their significance depends largely on where the reader's area of interest lies. To someone interested in Irish or British politics, the Aussie is just somebody on the far side of the world; and vice-versa for someone interested in Australian politics. Neither was a front-rank player in their own country, and while the Aussie was leader of his party, it was minority party which never had more than 8% of Senate seats. The Irishman was only in Parliament for four years, but had been the chair in Fermanagh of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association; in area where The Troubles were intense, he ran one of the most important political forces in Northern Ireland at that troubled stage in its history. The article on him is very weak at the moment, but readers are not well-served by trying rank two people whose roles were very difft, despite the common label "politician".
Retaining the disambiguation page allows misplaced links to be easily identified and fixed, and ensures that the minimum number of readers find themselves at the wrong article. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:20, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Importance is subjective. Stats show people are interested in these people in approximately equal amounts: Frank McManus (Australian politician) 115 views, Frank McManus (Irish politician) 184 views, Frank McManus (baseball) 143 views. By that measure the Australian is least important (to modern readers). A disambiguation page is the best option. Tassedethe (talk) 18:19, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's an important approach too. Thanks for the data. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:22, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per BrownHairedGirl and Tassedthe. Personally, I've only heard of the Irish one, and so I'm not convinced at all that the Australian is the primary topic. DrKiernan (talk) 18:55, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Given the prominence of the The Troubles in Northern Ireland at the time, the Irish politician, elected for a knife-edge and somewhat volatile constituency was far better known in Europe (and possibly in North America) than the Australian. The Australian certainly isn't the primary use, and the current titles are better left as they are. Skinsmoke (talk) 06:38, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
