Confusion?

edit

There seems to be some risk of confusion between the actors Florence Eldridge and Frances Eldridge. It's also not clear if this is the same Frances that married Arthur_Bingham_Walkley[1], since Ancestry.com has his wife as Frances Sarah Maud Antrobus not Eldridge.

The Stage has reminiscences of a 1914 season at Seaford with a Frances Walkley who had ambitions until she got married. This seems unlikely to be the same person.[2]

The IMDb and AFI listings both have the same films, which were both made in Canada in the early 1920s. It's not entirely clear the Frances Eldridge in the films is the same one who married Walkley, or if it is a mis-spelling of Florence Eldridge.

In short, at the moment I've yet to find confirmation Frances Eldridge is not Florence Eldridge. EEHalli (talk) 16:28, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks to PamD I have found plenty of references to Frances Eldridge, including a photograph of her in the trade press in 1920. I am now confident this Frances Eldridge is not the one who married Walkley so that information needs to be changed on IMDb. There is no evidence she was British in any of the articles, so I think she may have been miscategorised. She also does not look like Florence Eldridge, so I am now confident she is a separate actor whose promising career in cinema collapsed after she signed to to a dodgy studio. This looks useful - and I suggest that you cold note in her filmography that God's Crucible is also known as The Foreigner, as that's the title used in this source. (We have a redirect from The Foreigner (1921 film), and a dab page entry for this title). Reading this source, it's interesting that neither imdb nor the wikipedia article lists her in the cast of Madonnas and Men; there is no Wikipedia article for Wings of Pride, and Sun Haven Studios explains why (but suggests that Madonnas and Men was also only "in production" when the studio closed ... perhaps Rolfe took it elsewhere to complete?

Curiouser and curiouser: imdb has a listing for Wings of Pride, produced by Rolfe, but she's not in it. PamD 21:29, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @User:PamD! I've removed the para about the marriage for the moment, and filled in the details from the fan magazine. I'm also trying to check if the Frances Eldridge mentioned as appearing with Bela Lugosi in The Red Poppy is this one or, as wikipedia currently has it as the Florence.EEHalli (talk) 22:31, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Trailing her through the source you found, she appears to have sued a production company in 1921 for failure to pay. That might explain why she's suddenly disappearing. I'm going to find out how to find a US court case now!EEHalli (talk) 23:38, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Glad to have been able to help! Sounds more interesting than the standard silent movie bio. PamD 15:01, 23 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
