Population Citation

Does this need a reference? Between 1800 and 1860 Floyd County experienced a huge boom in population doubling many times over.[citation needed], There is a population box a little further down that shows this. The whole state experienced population boom in those years, something like 4000%Cool10191 (talk) 13:35, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

French Immigrants

The majority of them came from Alsace-Lorraine, border country with the Germanic Empire. This explains why so many of them had German names: eg; KNÄBEL which later became KNAEBEL or KNABLE. "They chose to settle in this area because Floyd Knobs and Ohio River Valley resembled their homeland". "They had left to escape from almost constant war between France and Germany for control of their homelands". As stated by Casper, Alouis/Aloys and Frederick Knäbel/Knable, (who were some of the early immigrants) in their journals when they arrived in the area 1838 (Frederick arrived 3 years later in 1841).

I moved the above here from the article. It seems odd to me to add this, it just sticks out from the rest of the history. If we are going to add a statement about 300 french people who moved to Floyd county in 1841 then we should probably add information on where all the other immigrants came from, which could be it's own article. I think if we are going to go into detail on the french immigrants where should make another artcle: French Settlers In Floyd County Indiana and link it on this page. It just seems odd, the first settlers arrived there in the 1780s, 60 years earlier, and floyd knobs was already settled in 1841. For now I have just footnoted this information w/ref so it doesn't detract from the article.Cool10191 (talk) 01:59, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

The Encyclopedia of Louisville has a whole article on the French immigrants to the area. I'll write the article History of the French in Louisville in a few hours.--Bedford 02:12, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

One other thing, concerning the above information, the people of alsace-lorrain (this is from memory) are nationally french, but they were ethinicly german. Lorraine was conquered from the german princes by louis the XIV (or maybe his son) around 1750ish. And, most of the central france is of Frankish decent anyways, which is a german tribe, "French" is rather hard to define as it ecompasses so many different ethinicities. Point being, that their last name was german would not be suprising - because they were german... I think that removes the noteworthiness of that part of the statement.Cool10191 (talk) 03:19, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Ok cool, my wife is Acadian, but thats a little different kinda french, I have done some research on the Acadians and their Cajun and other decendants. Some of them where in the area here way back then too. Several settled here (southern indiana) after the "Great Upheaval" in Acadia. I have a book on that somewhere, that could have some interesting stuff in it.Cool10191 (talk) 03:46, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Yea I tried to include the French briefly with my references I listed by that Dmknable dude keeps adding odd phrased material which appears as origional research. The reference he listed doesn't seem legit, he has done this twice at least. -Jahnx (talk) 04:09, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

I started it, but I don't feel well enough to extend it tonight, and will eb working much of tomorrow and may be out of town Saturday.. The pages in the Encyclopedia of Louisville about the French are on Google Books, so if one of you wants to complete it, go ahead. We can all get a DYK credit.--Bedford 04:18, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
