yesterday I noticed that a fascinating factoid was rudely deleted from this article. The photographs of President Truman's first inauguration were indeed the very first ever taken of such an unscheduled event. This is notable.

I know that it seems hard to believe, and it's true. Teddy Roosevelt's expelling all photographers from his 1901 swearing-in was extremely well documented, and while Coolidge's was recreated for the press several hours later after everyone had awakened and had a nutritious breakfast, the swearing-in itself was done under the light of a kerosene lamp at 2 AM. Back in the 19th century, photography was so primitive that no one thought of taking a photo at the time. Coolidge and Chester Arthur later repeated the oath a second time in order to make sure it was legal, but I'm not sure if they photographed either or those. So yes, Truman's was the very first one.
