On original research

The circumstances of a death (mysterious) and the cause of death (heart attack, perhaps) are two different things. This is one reason why we rely mainly on secondary sources to interpret the meaning of events, rather than finding our own conclusions based on our opinions of what a primary document such a a death certificate says. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 16:30, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Here's my suggestion to Ray Battersby (who should really sign on as a Wiki editor). I had my own troubles with the 'no original research' clause, which can really crimp an author's style, especially when combined with the 'no conflicts of interest' clause! Two suggestions; 1. publish your materials online - the interviews and revisions of incorrect history, with all the data/photos you have to back up your research. 2. patience - contact a sympathetic wiki editor (Denis or myself for example), note that the materials are published, and that you feel a revision to the Degner/Suzuki story is in order. That usually does the trick - we like the truth as much as you do. On a personal note, it's long been the scuttlebutt in classic racing circles that the oft-repeated Degner tales included an awful lot of conjecture and dramatic license on the part of 'journalists' who ought to know better. Conflicting versions of history

Re: the discussion over at User_talk:Dennis_Bratland#Ernst_Degner...

This article should be expanded to comprehensively review the conflicting versions of Degner's life and particular the circumstances of his death. The book Stealing Speed by Mat Oxley, and other sources [1][2] suggest a mysterious, violent death, while Roy Battersby's Team Suzuki contradicts the sensational account, saying he died naturally of a heart attack.

At the moment I don't see an obvious way for us to decide which sources to believe, and so we should instead do our best to describe the points of disagreement in as neutral a way possible. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 06:32, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
