Top Tips? I'm off to Enniscorthy for the weekend. Any suggestions of places to visit, pubs to drink in?

Reply: In town the 1798 Centre is well worth a visit. The County museum in the Castle is a little old fashioned but has some interesting stuff. Also the short trip up to Vinegar Hill after the 1798 Centre is well worth the effort.

Good pubs are Shenanigans, Stamps & Rackards in the centre, Donohoes & Doyles for atmosphere and Hayes in Court Street if it's quietness & good beer you're looking for. Best pint in town is the White House on Shannon Hill but the decor is a little "Republican"!

Dear God, if the White House is pouring a decent pint, then the old town has changed indeed. How about the Old House?

Desdemona --- 2 pubs worth a mention: (1) The Antique Tavern, one of the smallest pubs in Ireland, full of - well, you guessed it - antiques, strung from every available point. Relaxed, rather than meat-market atmosphere. (2) Furlong's, opposite the swimming pool, has a few stools and a keg behind the grocery counter.

Also "On the night of the 4th March 1804 .... and there renew the 'Republic of Wexford' ideals which had very briefly reigned in 1798" http://workers.labor.net.au/182/letters3_three.html

The rebels had more success in the south-eastern county of Wexford, where a rebel army up to 15,000 strong led by a Catholic priest Father John Murphy captured Enniscorthy on 29 May and Wexford the following day. The Republic of Wexford was declared. This was the high point of the rebellion however, and the Wexford rebels suffered defeats at New Ross, Arklow and Newtownbarry before being finally defeated at the battle of Vinegar Hill on 21 June. http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/Irish_Rebellion_of_1798

Before removing this reference again, please ensure that you can prove that this declaration did not occur. It is a widely held belief around the town.

Sorry but this is not proof you are using opinion and terminology as fact, when did this declaration take place exactly, can you provide actual evidence as opposed to something you found in google? Think about what you are saying - that the Wexford rebels were fighting only for the independence of Wexford! The term republic of Wexford is retrospectively used by modern historians and does not refer to an actual declaration - the closest thing was the Committee of Public Safety which was set up in Wexford town. For proof, read "The Mighty Wave: The 1798 Rebellion in Wexford" Daire Keogh & Nicholas Furlong

PS The third piece of "proof" you provide is a cached version of an earlier version of Wikipage Irish Rebellion of 1798!

Rivalry In the town edit

I know it wont take up that much but it is there and i think the split of the town into two parishes by the bishop in the '70s would be a good addition to the article. Any thoughts?--Iano200 17:33, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not a bad idea, but better tidy up the spelling first. There are only two "n"s in St Senan's.

I've just corrected the spelling of St Senan's there. I would say that there has been rivalry between the east and west sides of the river since Enniscorthy was first settled and certainly since it was built up in the 16th century and the "English" largely settled on the "town" side while the Irish by and large were on the "Shannon" side. I also think that the rivalry has abated in recent years since people from the top of the town settled in what were then new estates in Slaney View and Fr Murphy Park. Of course you will always have people who try to emphasize the distinction, sometimes just for the crack and other times for more sinister reasons but I think most people don't even think about it.

Naturally I stand to be corrected!-- Podge Hall 21:51, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Population edit

The article says Enniscorthy is the third-largest town in Wexford. What's the second largest, then?Donnacha 01:23, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

According to the 2002 Small area stats from the CSO Enniscorthy & environs have a combined population of 8964 people while New Ross and environs has a population of 6422. It is indeed possible that Gorey may have overtaken both in the years since but on this basis and until the latest census figures are available I'm upgrading Enniscorthy to number 2 town!! -- Podge Hall 22:01, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sports teams edit

I suggest that the town's (former?) hurling teams should be mentioned in a new section on Sport, as two Enniscorthy teams are listed in Wexford Senior Hurling Championship. Enniscorthy Shamrocks GAA, St. Aidan's GAA and alternative punctuation mark St. Aidan’s GAA could then be redirected to that section. - Fayenatic (talk) 12:15, 19 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
