Courtesy Title edit

It's a bit surprising that the heir is styled Viscount Petersham when the Stanhope viscountcy is 13 years senior. Is there a reason? —Tamfang (talk) 22:14, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Courtesy titles have no struct rules (they are not officially recognised titles): it's all tradition. The title Viscount Petersham was awarded at the same time as the Earl of Harrington title and thus has always been used as courtesy title for the heir. The title Viscount Stanhope of Mahon only passed to the Earls of Harrington later: the current 12th Earl of Harrington is the 12th Viscount Petersham, but is only the 9th Viscount Stanhope of Mahon.
