Infobox edit

Hi, I noticed that when the infobox is called 'Infobox monastery' instead of 'Infobox church' it doesn't display much of relevant information, such as the map, architecture and history - must be a quirk of Wiki. I know Downside is a monastery, but I think keeping the infobox as 'Infobox church' is better way to display all the information about the abbey. Hope this helps, Pjposullivan (talk) 22:14, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't dispute your contribution. Unfortunately the most accurate category is monastery. I think changing the contents available in a category is the best way to go. I have encountered similar limitations in other categories. Daniel the Monk (talk) 22:17, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree, I want the infobox to be 'Infobox monastery', but how do we change the parameters of the infobx? Pjposullivan (talk) 22:19, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

8 Why don't yu revert it to Infobox monastery after sorting out the template? We all want this article to be the best it can be, but until the template is changed, this is the only way people can see all the relevant information. No-one can see the name of the infobox until they click edit. Changing it to Infobox monastery is not a reader friendly edit.

    • Unfortunately, neither is the church format, as unnecessary and confusing information is given there, and the description of the abbey as a basilica is misleading. I've been trying to find out how to change the format of a template for a while. May I suggest that you refer the question to an administrator? I've been trying but haven't been able to find who would be empowered for that.
    • It seems better to work with the most accurate category than to twist an inaccurate one for more information. Daniel the Monk (talk) 22:27, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

While waiting for changes to the infobox. I have added a location map which I think was one of the requests above.— Rod talk 08:56, 9 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

At a time when Downside has come under criticism, it may be noted that, in the Mendip area (where the body of a rough traveller lay unnoticed near a road for up to a year) the abbey offers wayfarers accommodation at a nominal charge. 22 August 2018---Clive sweeting

Do you have a citation to support this Clive sweeting? I can find no references on the internet to this service so have removed the claim for the moment. Peteinterpol (talk) 10:37, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Name of the Abbey versus that of the church edit

The abbey and the basilica are distinct, whereas the first sentence conflates them with "The Basilica of St Gregory the Great, commonly known as Downside Abbey."

Given that the monks are seeking a new home, this ought to be kept in mind: the abbey will always be the Abbey of St Gregory the Great until it is no more, and it may well remain Downside Abbey, just as Douai Abbey is such despite its location in Woolhampton and its dedication to St Edmund.

Also clarification on the buildings which are protected (Grade I, etc.) ought to be provided. Is it the abbatial church which is also a basilica? Is it the entire building? Johnnygoesmarchinghome (talk) 12:26, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Good points. I had a go at tidying the intro and added detail on the Grade I listed church in the article body, also a new section on the Grade II* monastery. Wire723 (talk) 18:46, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
