excessive control?

edit

this article mentions "excessive control" by the state with respect to the style and content of defa films. it also advances the hypothesis that this policy discouraged "competent" screenwriters from working at the studio. i would venture to say that this is a breach of the wikipedia neutrality principle. the people who ran the defa film studios knew exactly what they were doing. the control that the state exerted on defa's output wasn't "excessive"--it was quite in line with the organizational culture surrounding film making in east germany and quite in line with the organizational culture of east german bureaucracies on the whole. any "implicit" comparision to the type of control excercised on film makers in the capitalist west just isn't relevant. (the way the "hollywood majors" have operated in the past or may operate today isn't germaine. hollywood isn't defa. in fact, i would advance the thesis that the bureaucracies of defa on the one hand and twentieth century fox et al are in fact incommensurable. they are the products of two different kinds of cultures with two different kinds of awareness and sensitivity.) even bringing up this point (the matter of so-called "excessive control") is an example of cultural insensitivity--a kind of insensitivity with respect to east german bureaucratic culture. as for the matter of "competent" screenwriters and directors shying away from working at defa due to the "control" that would be maintained over them, (a) who is and isn't competent is a matter of opinion, and (b) if these individuals were unwilling to work within the defa bureaucracy (or they felt they would be "uncomfortable" working at this studio), they probably would have been ineffective, i.e. incompetent workers had they been recruited and accepted for employment there. they might have been "competent" in the sense that they possessed certain talents and skills that might have been employed elsewhere, but whatever competence they possessed wasn't what was needed and wanted at defa. it wasn't so much that they weren't "right" for defa. it was more along the lines of defa just not being "right" for them. in all likelihood, such individuals would have been more comfortable writing novels, or perhaps writing for their own amusement. if you can't stand the heat, you should stay out of the (bureaucratic) kitchen. if you have a "problem" with the bureaucracy (whatever type of bureaucracy it may be), it isn't the bureaucracy's problem, it's YOUR problem. these days people try to be culturally sensitve with respect to christian culture, jewish culture, muslim culture, etc. how about trying to be sensitive with respect to BUREAUCRATIC cultures? the deep culture of the defa bureaucracy should be accorded as much respect as, say, african american culture, or asian american culture, etc. (i'm not saying that defa bureaucratic culture should be respected because it is a part of german culture. i am saying that it should be respected because it is a kind of bureaucratic culture. instead of criticizing and demonizing bureaucratic cultures, we should try to understand them and view them sympathetically, or in a neutral way at least.)76.127.228.117 (talk) 06:45, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The short article about DEFA's Stacheltier series is unreferenced and has been proposed for deletion. The period from 1953 to the 1960s current a gap in DEFA#History which the text of Das Stacheltier can help fill, and can be supported by reference to Sylvia Klötzer's "Satire und Macht".
