The result of the move request was: Both moved per Necrothesp's proposal. The articles are now at David Thomson (Labor Party politician) and David Thomson (National Party politician). People agree that the former disambiguation was awkward, and Necrothesp's idea has the most supporters. There wasn't unanimity on whether 'Australian' was helpful. {{requested move/dated}}

– Target titles provide more direct disambiguation - adding middle names removes the requirement for further (parenthetical) disambiguation (not to mention the extra-additional-still further disambiguation of birth year) Blueboar (talk) 23:08, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Question Hi Blueboar, normally we given priority to WP:COMMONNAME over non-parenthetic disambiguation, can you link to policy/guideline suggesting we give priority to natural disambiguation over WP:COMMONNAME? In ictu oculi (talk) 23:31, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I would say that the deciding policy point for this move request (at least for me) is the principle of Conciseness. This is explained in the WP:AT policy as: "The title is no longer than necessary to identify the article's subject and distinguish it from other subjects.". In these two cases, using the middle name to disambiguate is simply more concise than disambiguating by the somewhat cumbersome parenthetical (with occupation and birth date). I've got no real opinion on this one, but for this option I would think (Australian Labor politician) and (Australian National politician) would be better. Frickeg (talk) 00:50, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Any of these would be fine with me. Blueboar (talk) 00:56, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Frickeg's suggestion is fine with me. -- Necrothesp (talk) 08:24, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
