Adding information

I would like to add information to this page, but would like feedback from other viewers before doing so. I think this artice needs more information concerning how government is involved in coral reef protection. For instance, gathering information on laws concerning the protection of coral reefs would be extrememly useful. Also, more pictures of coral reefs would be helpful along with some statistics on how fast coral reefs are dying. A list of agencies that work for coral reef protection would be helpful.Jeffreywessel22 (talk) 21:16, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Be bold and just add information you think should be there. Try and keep a global balance, not just adding a whole lot of stuff about one country. The basic principle is to verify what you add by citing it with reliable sources. Protection: refugia

There will still be some coral species left in 50 years time in some places. Such places, called refugia can be found in the Red Sea and the Southern Great Barrier Reef. By prioritizing these places, it may be possible so save some coral species

Besides natural refugia, it's also possible to make artificial refugia. For example, some atols like Rangiroa in Polynesia have one inlet and one outlet. Coral can be placed within the atol, and the water can be changed artificially to contain less co² and less heat, that can be done:

• by placing a gabion filled with olivine at the inlet
• and by possibly adding pipes with propellers conducting seawater from greater depths to where the coral grows (seawater at greater depth is colder)

Also note btw that it's also possible to simply disperse crushed olivine at natural reefs; the effect of this would be far lower than the artificial refugia proposal above, but it has the advantage that some reefs can be protected in situ, at the cost of needing to use a lot more olivine KVDP (talk) 15:19, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Not every fact referenced has an appropriate, reliable reference. I’ve noticed that most of this information is assumed common knowledge, but it shouldn’t be assumed that most people know this sort of information about coral reefs already. I do believe there should be more citations included within this article.

Although there may not be enough citations, I do believe the sources used for this article are very neutral and factual, helping create a very informative article. The citations are also well adapted rather than being “close paraphrased” which I truly appreciate. This article seems to be very neutral and informative.

Lead Section: The first sentence of the article does a good job of showing the reader the concern behind the endangered coral reefs but if you were trying to focus on coral reefs as a whole and not just the topic of the endangerment of coral reefs then it may help to start of a sentence with the significance of coral reefs instead and then moving into the concern for them. This is shown in the "Services" section but not in the lead section and adding this to the lead section can give a better overall understanding of the topic of coral reefs. The rest of the lead section is able to summarize what the rest of the article is about. The lead section also could show some controversies of this topic if you had wanted to include this in another section of your article. The lead section does a great job of keeping a neutral stance on the topic.

Table of Contents: The table of contents have a good, relevant sources that aren't too broad or specific. Topics are clearly written and would definitely aid the reader in navigating the page. Having the restoration section at the end of the article after the death section was effective in closing up the article.

Sections: The material written fits within the proper sections. The "Coral Reefs" and "Human induced effects" section do have a good amount of information, but more information could be added to the other sections so that the reader can get a better understanding of each topic and subtopic related to coral reefs. Statements are properly cited and direct the reader to the references page.

Topic: For the most part the article is neutral, there a just a few things such as "tourists who don't know or don't care" and "third and worst such strike" that can make the article lean slightly less neutral but these could also be raw facts which keeps the article at a neutral stance. However, these sentences could make the article seem less formal which could be changed to sound more "encyclopedic". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dkim38 (talk • contribs)

@LHauptman: We don't use internal urls for sourcing, but fortunately they redirect to the articles on Elsevier. The first source:

Added sentence on marine laboratory significance

Hello, I have added a sentence regarding the importance of marine laboratories located near coral reefs in the restoration section by stating "Laboratories located near reefs, such as Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration — which has planted more than 43,000 corals in the Florida Keys — play a crucial role in maintaining these nurseries." I have also cited the website explaining MOTE Marine Lab's coral reef restoration project. I thought adding information on the significance of marine laboratories would provide more knowledge and scope on the current restoration efforts. Hello, I've edited the description under "Ecosystem Services" to fully incorporate all the services coral reefs provide. There were grammatical/syntax errors and information that could have been improved upon. I also edited the "Biodiversity" and "Medicine" sections, adding more reliable sources and detailed information. Finally, I added the following subsections: "Coastal Protection," "Fisheries," and "Tourism & Recreation," as these are major ecosystem services that coral reefs provided that were not previously mentioned. @RexxS: I appreciate your feedback. The "Ecosystem Services" section was already on present on this page with the "Biodiversity" and "Medicine" subsections. I decided to add three more sections because they are also major ecosystem services that were not discussed about. You had a great suggestion about editing the "Coral reef" article (which I will now plan to do in the near future), but I think it is also important to include this section here to help inform others of why coral reef protection is so critical and necessary.

My plan is to create a new section in the article for "Management strategies for Invasive Species" which will include Crown of Thorns starfish and Lionfish. I have added a new section "Management strategies for Invasive Species" this included details of what management strategies are and why they are useful. I also added a sub-heading to this section, "Crown of Thorns Starfish" with 2 subheadings under that as well "Manual Control" and "Water quality control". I wanted to add a third subheading for "Marine Protected Areas" as this is another management strategy however there is already a heading for Marine Protected Zones and I wasn't sure if I should include that as it might sound redundant.
