Hello, I am new to Wikipedia and have no idea how to contact other users.

My surname is Colleran and I am basically looking for the source that connects the surname Colleran to Ui Talcharaine. I have always thought my surname is a likely corruption of Mac Allmhurain, which in Gaelic sounds like Mac All-ooo-ren.

Someone please help me.

Meaning of cúil edit

The more usual spelling for Old Irish 'wood, forest' is 'caill': http://dil.ie/7742 in DIL, and modern Irish 'coill'

'Cúil' (as distinct from 'cuil', fly) is translated as corner, nook, etc, as in Cúil Aodha: http://dil.ie/13497 in DIL.

Cullagh=An Choilleach is in Mayo, nonetheless 'corner' seems more plausible to me, in spite of Ó Flaithbheartaigh.

Has anyone an opinion on this?

The naming in these articles is all over the place — I’m currently putting together a bit of an overview at Talk:Conmhaícne. We really need some expert advice. I agree that relying on an 18th century English translation of Roderic O’Flaherty’s 17th century Latin work isn’t likely to tell us much about current consensus on these names. The best we can do is to try to survey the literature and choose what seems the least controversial version, while making it clear that some of the meaning is probably lost to history. ⚜ Moilleadóir ✍ 03:19, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
