It looks like the Escher form uses distorted (nonregular) octahedra, shortened square dipyramid polyhedra. This is or may be described under Compound of three octahedra#Symmetries, but there's no picture of this form (except Escher's art itself). I'm not sure what is best (since compound appearance is very different), but think this is confusing. Tom Ruen (talk) 03:47, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's used in other Escher images but not in Stars. It can also be viewed as a stellated rhombic dodecahedron, and is already discussed in the history section. —David Eppstein (talk) 04:25, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
