Edits to wikipedia page about Clara Deser

edit

I am suggesting several changes, commensurate with my status in the field of climate science, see below:

1) Change "Clara Deser is an American climate science researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research."

to "Clara Deser (born 1961) is an American climate scientist. She is a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research where she leads the Climate Analysis Section. Deser was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2021."

Why it should be changed: Provides more detail and the National Academy information.

2) Change "Early and Personal life" entry from:

"Clara Deser was born to a theoretical physicist and as a kid loved mathematics and map making. In her spare time she likes to hike, cook, and play the piano."

to

"Clara Deser was born in Waltham, Massachusetts to a Polish theoretical physicist (Stanley Deser) [1] and a Swedish artist (Elsbeth Deser) [2]. As a child, she loved mathematics and map making. She earned her B.S. degree in earth and planetary sciences from MIT in 1982, and Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington in 1989 under the supervision of John Michael Wallace [3]. She was a postdoctoral fellow with Maurice Blackmon at the Cooperative Institute for Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado [4], and joined the National Center for Atmospheric Research [5] in 1997."

Why it should be changed: provides more substantive information conveyed in a professional style.

3) Change "Research" entry from:

"In 2016 Clara Deser had partnered with Benjamin Sanderson and used two existing sets of model simulations to investigate what future summers might look like. By using those models they predicted that the summers from 2061 to 2080 will be the hottest on record if the carbon emissions will continue to rise.

In 2018 she praised James Hansen's prediction on global temperature forecast calling it "incredible" and "astounding"."

to:

"Deser’s research encompasses global climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. She is known for her observational and modeling studies of the interactions among the atmosphere, oceans and sea ice that give rise to modes of climate variability on interannual-to-multidecadal timescales, and for delineating their role in projections of regional climate change. She has studied a range of natural phenomena including El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Variability and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, and investigated anthropogenic influences on climate at regional scales. Deser uses numerical models of the earth’s climate system to understand the physical processes governing these natural modes of variability and their predictability, and for elucidating the mechanisms of human-induced climate change, especially the regional effects of greenhouse gases and aerosol emissions. The role of sea ice loss on global climate is another major research focus. Deser pioneered the use of large ensembles of climate model simulations to probe the combined influences of natural and human-induced contributions to climate variability and change. Such large ensembles provide a quantitative framework for assessing the risks of climate change and associated impacts on extreme weather, and provide crucial information for adaptation and mitigation efforts."

Why it should be changed: it does not properly reflect the scope of my research.

4) Change the "Honors" entry from:

2021: Member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences. 2017: Bjerknes Lecture, American Geophysical Union

to:

• 1999: Meisinger Award, American Meteorological Society • 2008: Fellow, American Meteorological Society • 2014: Fellow, American Geophysical Union • 2016: Community Earth System Model Distinguished Achievement Award • 2017: Bjerknes Lecture, American Geophysical Union • 2018: University of Oslo “Inspiration Award” • 2020: Charney Award, American Meteorological Society • 2021: Elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences • 2021: Revelle Medal, American Geophysical Union

Why it should be changed: it does not include all of my major awards.

5) Add a new entry entitled "External links" with the following two items:

• Clara Deser’s Homepage at the National Center for Atmospheric Research [6] • Clara Deser’s publications indexed by Google Scholar [7]

  • Hi Dr. Deser, thank you for the feedback. I have made some of the changes requested. Can you provide reliable third-party sources for this information, particularly about your research? I absolutely agree that it would be valuable to have in the article, but especially for biographies of living persons, it is important to have reliable sources for the information. Of note, we would need secondary sources for this information, if there are biographies of your work and career that are published by your university or others.
