Why does this page need attention?

The most noticeable part of the article when it is first presented to you is the long list of amalgamated cities, shires and towns that made up the city. This section should be put further down the article under a History subhedding. Also, many people I have presented this article to have never seen the BCC Flag before - it is rarely used. Should it be used here? There also needs to be some work on Council's structure (Transport, Works, etc) and they're current projects, such as council's vision for 2010. I agree that the list of cities, shires etc should be further down the page, perhaps in a tabulated form so that it doesn't take up so much space. However, regarding the flag, I am certainly familiar with it, and it is always displayed at City Hall. It should be included, as it is still an official symbol of Brisbane, and is certainly part of its history. Artorius 09:57, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I just attempted to tabulate the pre-1925 council info, but wasn't too successful -- somebody who's more familiar with Wiki table markup might be able to help. I agree that it's a little cumbersome at the moment (because of all that white space to the right of the list!) -- ideally what I would like would be for three columns of lists, each headed with "Cities", "Towns" and "Shires" in bold. As for the flag, Artorius is correct, it is flown every day in King George Square and also in City Plaza outside the Brisbane Administration Centre. [1] has an official list of council emblems. City of Brisbane Act 1924

I notice this article does contain a minor reference to the 'City of Brisbane Act 1924' but I can't help feeling that this could be elaborated on. I always understood that the powers afforded to it under the Act, combined with the shear size of the amalgamation, gave Brisbane City Council some rather unique characteristics. At this point in time I lack the accurate information to do much editing on this subject. This is an article on an LGA, BCC should only cover one section

This article is listed as an article on an LGA, at the bottom it is on a list of LGAs in qld, and the chart at top right is the one used for a geographical LGA

this article is in fact about the City of Brisbane LGA, and not just the authority that governs it (BCC)

To put it in line with LGA articles for other australian cities, such as the city of sydney and the city of melbourne, i have changed references in this article to refer to the City of Brisbane (as the chart was already titled, and most of the article's content already refered to) with a section on governance (city council structure, politics, etc info)

this puts the article in line with all the other australian LGA articles, and makes it consistant with what this article is categorized as, an article on an LGA

to reflect this, i would like to change the name of the article to "city of brisbane" as is done with other LGAs eg city of sydney, city of perth, city of logan, etc etc, and have "brisbane city council" redirect to the section on governance (in line with other articles).

this will simplify and comply to standards set and take away all the recent confusion on wiki resulting from the fact this article was not named in accordance with its content.

As is used for all other aust cities, the word "brisbane" will now have three articles. One on the metro area (default redirect), which it already has and is already the default redirect, one on the LGA of the city of brisbane, which already existed as this article which was wrongly named which is where the problem stemmed from (this includes section on governance under BCC and BCC redirects to this), and an article on the suburb, Brisbane 2000 (ie, the CBD). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.31.63.196 (talk) 07:31, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Brisbane City Council → City of Brisbane — The article is about the local government area, not the Council that governs it. • Comment A couple of points. You are right, the article does not cover the area in much depth at present but the scope of the article is still clearly more than just the governance arrangements. The article ideally should look something like City of Melbourne and City of Sydney. Secondly, other Queensland articles on local government areas such as Gold Coast City are about the area and the governance and there does not appear to be any reason for the same to apply here. I am not opposed to having an article purely on the governance arrangements and that article having the title "Brisbane City Council" but it seems a little strange to have an article purely on the governance of an area and not one on the area itself. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 22:16, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
  • Comment sorry, I was unclear, I meant that the current article doesn't cover the area, whereas the proposed name should cover the area. So the problem was that the current article doesn't cover what the proposed name would cover. If it is expanded to cover the area, then that would solve the mismatch problem. Financial fraud

This actually applies to the Council, more than the City. However we don't seem to have a page on the council? (As discussed in the preceding move request section)

Scope of this article

Hey there! I'm a bit confused about the scope of this article. Brisbane City Council (the council organisation) and the City of Brisbane (the city) are different, but the City of Brisbane and Brisbane surely are the same? I would like to have a consensus about cleaning up these articles to provide an easier to understand experience for readers, by:

• combining City of Brisbane and Brisbane into just Brisbane (by adding a condensed section about the government structure of Brisbane in terms of wards and electorates etc), and
• spinning out Brisbane City Council into its own article.

They are very, very different concepts and should in no way be merged. The Brisbane article is about the metropolitan area of Brisbane as defined by the ABS, as with all Australian capital cities. It includes multiple local government areas. The City of Brisbane is just one of these local government areas. There is also the Moreton Bay Region, the City of Logan, the City of Ipswich, the Redlands City and part of the Scenic Rim Region which are all included in the Brisbane metropolitan area (and the subject matter of the Brisbane article). The City of Brisbane is just the largest of these local government areas, but it accounts for less than half of the population and area of Brisbane.

This is the same with Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and all other Australian capital city articles. The City of Sydney for example has a few hundred thousand people and accounts for some of the inner and eastern suburbs of Sydney. The City of Melbourne also has a few hundred thousand and includes some of the inner suburbs. There is no justification at all for merging the innermost council areas with the articles for any of these cities at large. For Australian city articles, we always keep the concept of LGAs (local government areas) separate for this reason as their boundaries are arbitrary and all Australian metro areas include multiple parts of multiple LGAs.

Please note, this article here refers to the City of Brisbane (the local government area which is governed by the Brisbane City Council - there is no separate article for the Brisbane City Council (if there was, I would say it should be merged with Citt of Brisbane - the LGA article as with all Australian LGA articles refers to the LGA land area govered by the BCC). This is a very different concept from metropolitan Brisbane, which is the subject of the Brisbane article - it is not appropriate to merge those as they relate to vastly different concepts.

You will see that I have now added an explanatory note at the head of the article in the same form as the one at the head of the Melbourne article to explain that this article refers to the City of Brisbane local government area which covers many of Brisbane's inner suburbs, that Brisbane refers to the metro area of Brisbane as a whole, and that Brisbane central business district refers to the CBD.--StormcrowMithrandir 06:14, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
