This is a highly subjective article - the fly-fishing reason for retirement, the Segovia quote (standard quote given all the time by Segovia to all artists - professional mannerism - Segovia has said the same of John Williams and Julian Bream) which is supported by a ref. Parkening is one of Americas's greatest classical guitarist thats not in question but this article is too subjective. I'll have a go at making it more neutral and I'm not too sure if the "Road to Damascus" reasons should stay. Faith based decisions are fine to give if a direct quote from the artist is included and even then we must be careful of what interpretations we assign to such statements. If no direct quote (albums of religious material are products not works of charity and unless Parkening's religious albums take on the same role as the Gideon bible and are given away for free in places like hotels then we really can't assign them any greater moral purpose especially since Christ chose an ascetic life of poverty and didn't charge a penny for his guidance) is offered then the article may be interpreted as just the writing of an editor with similar religious beliefs. We know that Parkening is religious and the previous editor is correct in pointing out the connection. However Bach was also religious but that didn't stop him from getting into trouble after a physical brawl with another player. Bach may have written the Mass in B minor but he didn't turn the other cheek. Religion and being religious does not guarantee anything more than trying one's best to stay within the moral codes you state or adhere to. Hopefully I'll be able to find an interview with Parkening where he discusses this in relation to his career and maybe I'll be able to remove the "saintly" tone of the article. Liner notes and AllMusic.com are usually unreliable sources so I'll have a look through the references - the Summerfield book might be better for references.

Needs amplification

While I was a college student, I attended a recital by Parkening in an auditorium holding about 2000 people at Michigan State University in the late 1970's. I was quite disappointed. While a very accomplished guitarist, Parkening indicated that he refused to use amplification devices in any of his performances. I could barely hear his instrument sitting back in the cheap seats, even with a respectful audience. His guitar also got out of tune during the performance. Playing a solo chamber instrument in room with more than 100 people without amplification is just stupid. He was right to quit the business - inability to build an audience inhibited his success.
